So I use to be a degenrate gambler - lost around 50k+ gambling for around 10 years mainly on sports betting. Haven't gambled for around 2 years now and the Gym has been a big part of my recovery.

Wondering if there are any recovering gamblers here - keeps me going when I hear others have been through the same experience and turned their lives around.

It's not possible in the long run to make money gambling. You can actually do a maths calculation to work out the probability of your bank reaching zero (as time gets large), and it turns out to be 1.

The only exception is if you have insider information. And even then you still need to use the Kelly criterion to size your bets.

To make money long term from gambling then you need to constantly make bets where you have an edge over the bookie. Either by using bonuses or finding odds that are higher than they should be. The vast majority of people making a living from gambling are those with connections to dogs / horses / stables etc. If you are constantly getting better odds than you should be and you have a large bankroll to ride out the variation then you can profit long term.

As said above...anyone who claims to have a 'system' for roulette or blackjack is full of shit. The house always has the edge unless you are using a bonus or cheating. Without either of these then the only reason someone would be in profit is down to luck and eventually the variation would usually catch up with them. The problem also with casinos is that they have max bet limits and their pot of money is much bigger than almost every punters...so it really is a mugs game.

It's ok if you gamble on a few big events and if you only gambling an amount that won't influence your finances if you lose.

I gamble like that, when I win I smile and when I don't I still enjoy the sport event as I wouldn't gamble an amount that I'm not ready to lose.

But I see that many people could not stay inside those parameters.

Enjoy a bet on the horses pretty regularly. Can not wait for Cheltenham in a couple of weeks!

Got some moderate sized bets on that will return a pleasing amount of profit.

My stakes have increased over the years in line with my earnings. I’ve never gambled more than I can afford to lose or blown my entire weeks wage in an afternoon in the bookies or anything stupid like that. Although I have at times gambled more than I intended to and it’s been a kick in the t1ts that pi55ed me off for 48 hours.

I’ve also had some very tidy returns over the years for next to nothing.

I’ve unquestionably lost more than I lose but I’ll carry on trying to find that one big bet for small stakes that could change my life. Because I enjoy it.

Those making a living from it are very few and far between but it absolutely can be done!

Probably already said it in here. I have never known a long-term wealthy gambler.

I've got a mate who was addicted to the fruits back in the late 90s - he made a fortunte. He knew all the tricks on Golden Dragon, Italian Job and other JPM and also Barcrest pub slot machines which I don't remember now.

Not going to say much else about it, but he's not doing so well now.

It's a mugs game. Avoid. (y)

Online Slots boys.
I usually set aside £30-40 a Month for Gambling as a bit of fun, never thinking I'm going to Invest, that's the Mugs Game but I've switched to Online Slots from Sports Betting was didn't seem very good, or lucky, usually my first pick would let me down but I've won £680 from about £40 on Slots, it's made up for all my losses but know full well they can suck you In so will stop while I'm ahead, maybe play again In a Month or two
