Always elevated CREATININE & low GFR in blood tests!

Ok so i know creatinine is due to break down of muscle (from working out) and the more muscle mass you have then the more creatinine is excreted in to the blood stream.

I get a full panel bloods done usually once every 4 - 6 weeks or so to check up on everything. Typically everything is fine however i always have elevated creatinine usually 5 - 10 points over the upper range (range being 66 to 112 umol/L). GFR is usually 65 - 70 which is "OK" but really for someone of my age (32) should be in the 90s. GFR is calculated on creatinine so high levels of this will of course lower the reading.

Please note i do NOT supplement with creatine monohydrates

So i have been out of the gym for 2 weeks and not eaten much in the way of high protein diet during this time so thought it would be a great opportunity to check on my creatinine level as there should not be much in the break down of muscle as i have been out of the gym. and to my surprise the creatinine results came back at 117 umol/L.

while the results are not "red light" - i am starting to worry about the long term efficiency of my kidneys. but at the same time i may be worrying about nothing as i know this is a common thing for athletes especially weight lifters due to the reason above including high protein diets.

Does anyone else have the same with their blood results but have confirmation that their is no issues with their kidneys from a doctor?

please note i am NOT talking about Creatine Kinase / CK but creatinine which pertains to kidney function tests.

cheers.

as a person with higher than normal muscle mass you will never have a normal creatinine level and because of this, it will affect your eGFR level.

creatinine is a waste product of muscle trauma so the more muscle you have the more creatinine you will produce, the eGFR is a level given from a calculation (Age+Race+creatinine level)

117 is not high by anyone's standard...

just to add high protein diets DO NOT damage healthy kidneys this has been proven time and time again

Hay bud, Not sure if you seen my log but i'm in a sim position as you, GFR for myself lowest has been 53

Long story short, I'm having a kidney scan next week to double check BUT as said about i have a lot more muscle than joe blogs so will be off in some ranges.

My last bloods last week came back as follows

GFR 67

Creatin 107

Potassium 4.7

Sodium 141

Urea 6.2

I had full bloods done 2 weeks before and GFR was 61 BUT everything is with in range "Liver/Thyroid/Blood count" so on and so forth.

those results are not bad really and based on what i have learnt now its is indeed our muscle mass and weight training - creatinine for us is not an accurate measurement of eGFR.

let us know how the scan goes anyhow - always good to be on top of things rather than assuming all is well.

They test your eGFR on blood test not GFR. eGFR is an estimate using other blood levels, it's inaccurate. It says I have stage 2 kidney disease. I've been going to hospital for my kidneys for like 2 years now because of it... I think it's a crock... I even had to have a CAT scan too and expose myself to dangerous levels of radiation for this bullshit.

It's all to do with the bodybuilding lifestyle, high protein diet, breaking down muscle, it elevates BUN and creatinine, which makes the NHS think you're close to kidney failure.

The medical profession doesn't know how to deal with bodybuilders. It's created for couch potatos only. Doctors don't seem to understand.
