Stretching regimen

Is there a generel guideline as to how one should go about stretching, and especially for strained/injured/tight areas?

My old physio told me to always hold it for 40 seconds and that 4 times daily is fine, but that going in the 5-6 times daily range is overkill.

Thoughts?

I'm no professional, but I see stretching as I do rehab of an injury.... You can not do enough!

As long as you're not in any pain and going past a point of discomfort then do as much as you can.

Only stretch a warm/ warmed muscle.
