Yes they do mate, they also bring in some outer delts and and brachialis into play. Give them a try for a few weeks. Hand spacing is also important !!!!!

Tried doing those for a while with a few diff techniques but i just dont think im 'built' for them if you know what i mean.

Made my shoulders feel really dodgy even at lighter weights.. prefer facepulls, shrugs, incline shrugs etc
i had the same problem. Hurts in some unusual places. still try them now and again with just the oly bar as a warm up.

i wouldnt do them INSTEAD of barbell shrugs.

Your trapezius is a very large muscle so do both exercises. I dont believe in only doing one exercise for traps, it doesnt seem right to do 3-4 different exercises for biceps which are a very small muscle group and then only doing 1 exercise for traps when they are a large muscle !

start with the basic compound mass builder barbell shrugs then continue the assault on your traps by doing upright rows with a close grip (close grip hits more traps, wide grip hits more delts) then even move onto seated dum shrugs if you really want a dinosaur neck ;)
