Ok, i've had a bash at some basic forum etiquette, please feel free to add or amend to it....

Forum Etiquette

If you are new to the board:

Make your first post an introduction in the general post section, it doesn’t have to be long – just a couple of lines about how old you are, where you’re from, how long you’ve been training, what you are trying to achieve etc.

If you have been reading the board for a while you are probably already familiar with some of the ‘regulars’ personalities, the ‘in jokes’ and general banter that goes around, you must remember though until you have made a few posts no-one knows anything about you – hold off joining in the jokes and insults (especially those of a more personal nature) until you are a bit more established.

The best way to become part of the board is just to get stuck in and start posting, don’t feel scared, no-one is going to attack you for having an opinion as long as you don’t come across too aggressively and are willing to accept that you may not always be right, a simple IMO (in my opinion) at the beginning of a post is enough to show you are not challenging anyone.

A lot of the bonding between UK-M members takes place on MSN. Send a PM to some other members with your MSN email address and most will add you to their list.

General workings of the board

There are four types of member: Administrators – this is just Paul Govier and Lorian They own and manage the board, they out rank everyone on here and what they say goes. If you have a technical problem these are the guys to contact. Moderators – The moderators are hand picked members who have made an outstanding contribution to the board, they are here to keep the board running smoothly. This includes editing posts, locking threads that get out of hand, displining and banning members who break the rules, you are allowed to disagree with a mod but you will never win a personal attack. Treat them with respect. Normal members – this is anyone who has joined the board. Lurkers – these are people of read the board but have not registered as members and never contribute, come in out of the cold it’ nice in here.

Post count – this is just that, the number of posts someone has made, as a general rule of thumb the more posts someone has the more respected they are on the board – this is not always the case though!

Rep points – These are represented by the green boxes members have below their name, the more boxes the better their reputation. You can give positive and negative points to any other member by clicking on the picture of the scales in any of their posts, you do not have to leave your name but it is considered extremely cowardly to leave negative points anonymously. Again the more reps someone has the more respected they are – this is not always the case.

Etiquette

CAPITAL LETTERS ARE CONSIDERED SHOUTING – it is difficult to read and highly irritating.

Don’t post multiple copies of the same message – pick the most appropriate place and post it there.

When starting a new thread make the title relevant and descriptive.

Try to make sure that a thread has not been posted before – use the search feature – the exception to this rules seems to be ‘music’ threads.

If you are replying to a post further up the thread always include a quote from the post so everyone know what particular statement you are replying to.

Don’t quote a whole post if it is long – just pick the relevant section, quoting a 500 word post just to add ‘I agree’ is considered bad form.

Don’t post consecutively, there is no need to post reply after reply in the same thread – if you want to add to something you have just said use the edit feature.

Stay on topic, taking someone elses thread off into another subject is called hijacking and is rude.

“flaming” is insulting another users post, opinion, subject, grammar in an attempt to pick an online fight. Debate and disagreement are fine but rudeness, insulting posts, personal attacks or inflammatory posts are not.

Spam is forbidden

Take everything you read with a pinch of salt. Remember all posts are just opinions, your health is at stake, make sure you have the full information before risking it

It is impossible to detect someones tone or manner in written posts, try not to take anything the wrong way or post anything that could be taken the wrong way. – a smiley makes it alright!

As a general rule of thumb the more replies a thread receives the better the post is, if all your threads are running to over two pages you a proably making a good contribution to the board, If you make a post that struggles to get two replies you should probably think twice before posting similar again

If you are an older member and someone makes an introduction – be friendly and welcoming, writing a first post can be daunting, lets make people want to keep posting at UK-M.

You should be aware that most members access UK-M from work, all posts should therefore be suitable for public viewing, If you are posting something that is not suitable try and put it in one of the private forums and mark it clearly NWS - not work safe

Try to keep swearing to a minimum in your posts, it is very frustrating trying to decipher pages of censored words, creative spelling to avoid the censor becomes tedious after a while and reduces the perceived integrity of the post

Be aware that everything you write on UK-M is published in the public domain, anyone could read this forum and that includes children. If you would say something to someone in person you should not say it on here

If you ask a question on a thread and get answers it is good form to add a post at the end thanking people for their help and letting everyone know which solution worked for you. This also helps any other users that may suffer the same problem at a later date.

Don't self promote your own website/business the moment you sign up, you should contribute something to the board and get a few posts under your belt first.

If a moderator locks or deletes a thread that is the end of the disscussion. You should not try to re-open debate by starting another thread or hijacking an existing one. If you really feel you need to resolve the issue PM the Mod to explain or resolve it with the other member via PM.

If someone posts a picture

It takes a lot of guts to post your picture on here, when commenting always be positive. If you have noticed a bad point on someones body you can bet they are already well aware of it themselves, If you are going to point out a bad point at least be positive about it for instance: If you notice someone has a vastly under-developed chest you could say something like 'all you need now is to bring your chest up to standard and you will look awesome' or maybe you could offer some practical advice 'incline bench press would really hit your upper chest and get some great mass on it'

in short - no-one wants to hear bad things about themselves, you also need to consider where that person has come from and what they have achieved, someone who has always been vastly overweight and has managed to shift 60lbs has made as much of an achievement IMO as someone who has just won their 3rd show

BUMP - When you post on a thread it automatically moves to the top of the forum where more people see it, by making a post saying 'bump' you are literally bumping it up the forum where it is more likely to be noticed and replied to. People often also use this as a statement of aggreement to what has already been said

flaming - Insulting another users post, opinion, subject, grammar or pretty much anything in an attempt to pick an online fight. Rudeness, insulting posts, personal attacks or inflammatory posts.
