Help me with the pain!

Ok I have just started going to the gym again after a few years and I am in soooooo much pain that it is not funny!
Whats with the pain? I cant remember it ever being this bad.
It is only my shoulders they felt great on the day of my workout and I was fine the next day but now 2 days later I cat hardly lift my arms up and doing things like pulling a door open on my wardrobe is killing me, my two year old can now lift more than me! my ego has nose dived!
Is there any way to calm the pain or do I just "put up and shut up" and wait for it to go.:mod:

Hello mate, right there are a hundred answers to your question!

Is the pain 1) because you have pulled somthing or 2)is it simply a case of working hard in the gym? I can usually tell the difference myself, by numb pain or sharpe. If the pain goes away after a few days - can be up to a week, then I think it is prob just over training. If you get consistant pain in the same place every time you train then it could be an injury and a spot of physio would help. Next time your down the gym make sure you warm up properly, a good 5 min of stretching and always do a light warm up set before you hit main work sets.

This is just my opinion mate, if it is really bad then i'd suggest you go to a doctor/physio.

Thanks mate, I think that what it comes down to is stupidity on my part I went in there like a mad man and threw big plates about like I used to not thinking I would need to start lower and build up to that weight after a few sessions.
I got the wife to give my shoulders a massage that helped.

careful with the massage lumpybumpy mate !

if its a muscle injury then massage within the first few days is a no no....it can open up the tear and extend the healing time..

my advice is ICE ICE ICE ...and straight away ...

thats if its an injury....

tho it sounds to me like you were simply just a little too eager, too soon.

train yer legs to rest the upper body.....but dont go mad!!

Did you see that program on five the other night "Super Size She" about Joanna Thomas? they said that massage tears the muscle and then it grows bigger as it heals! how does that work?
