STRANGE KNEE INJURY

:cursing: Well i was all psyched up for my deadlifting today, and when i picked up my first rep of my warm up weight. everything was fine. then when i locked out at the top of the rep my left knee felt really strange. It's a difficult feeling to describe, it almost felt like it was about to pop out and it was bending the wrong way, and felt really weak.

I did a few more reps but it felt too weird and i didnt wanna risk injury. it wasn't really painful just a strange feeling.

it is fine when i walk run jump whatever. but it just hurts when i lock out at the top after bending down. so i went be able to squat/deadlift. :( which obviously i can't let happen.

So does anyone know what the hell is up with my knee? any similar experiences? If it doesn't get better i just wont be able to lock out at the top of reps i guess.

when it hurts is it at the back of the knee or front.

cruciate ligament maybe,i would defo get a scan mate,or at least speak to a sport injury specialist.rest is the best thing for it and ibruprofen.if you do train,strap your knees and try not to lock out on your leg work.dont do leg press.

Thanks god, yeah i'm taking the ibuprofen so that's all good. it's felling bette so i'll see how it goes

there are structures in the knee joint (cruciates/ cartilage/ meniscus) and at the back of the knee joint (gastroc, hamstrings, popliteus, posterior capsule including arcuate ligament etc, tibial nerve) which could be implicated.

Does your knee (or knees) hyperextend? When you lie down and you do an isometric quads contraction (squeeze knee into floor), can you get your heel off the floor by more than an inch or so?

If yes, is it the same on both legs?

Some people have joint laxity naturally and if joint convergence (lock out) happens later in range, then you could in theory be placing too much stretch on a particular structure.Sometimes it's only noticeable when loading with extra weight (like deadlifting or squatting).

If its one knee only, then I suppose it could be as a result of a previous injury (causing relative laxity in the affected knee).

On the other hand, if you have some tightness at the back of the knee (in say a muscle group like hamstrings) then that could cause some irritation.

I get a clunk at the back of my left knee on open chain quads work (like cable ham curls). I can actually feel the semitendinosus tendon flicking over other structures. U haev also had precious hamstring pathology on that leg, so I suppose there's likely to be some relative length issues.

The advice from God was reasonable. Untill you can find why you're getting the problem, avoid full lock out on problem lifts.

Sometimes with patients post injury (like cruciate reconstructions or meniscal repairs) they can lack proprioception in the joint (sense of what they're actually doing with it).

If hyperextension was a problem, I might tape the back of the knee to avoid the last few degrees of lock out (works best with hairy legs :) )

I would try and find if there is a soft tissue issue in the meantime (too tight). Thats the easiest problem to address.

Any soft tissue therapist should be able to help (sports massage for example). If you think its hypermobile or joint based, see a physio.

Thanks alot for this mate really appreciate your help. it seems to be feeling alot better and not lockin out on my squats today worked absolutly perfectly, i was standing right up and tensing my hamstring so my leg was just short of being locked out and it went great. and i got 3 pb's. it is feeling better when i did try and lock out so since i can train around it quite comfortably i'm gonna leave unless it starts to feel any worse (and today it felt fine!)
