Myostatin

Gang

After DB reminding me of his latest conquest (see picture below) I was just wondering if anything ever came of Myostatin supplementation.

I know Biotest ranted and raved about it for ages, using the picture of DB`s new girl friend to promote it.

Just done a search on the web and couldnt really come up wit much.... any ideas?

This was Biotests claim to it:
--
THERE ARE NO LIMITS!™

The First Proven Myostatin Binder...

Biotest Myostat neutralises the gene mysotatin that can limit muscle growth. Biotest Myostat facilitates the forming of brand-new muscle cells that will develop and incorporate into existing, mature muscle and by increasing the actual number of muscle cells, the rate at which you actually grow will begin to accelerate over time, resulting in bigger and much faster gains.

Neutralize Myostatin and…Grow and Grow and Grow and Grow and Grow!

The greatest factor limiting your ability to gain muscle is, of course, genetics. More specifically, scientists have recently isolated one particular gene that, through a protein called myostatin, actually turns off muscle growth. Since then, scientists have searched the world for a solution — a way to neutralize the effects of myostatin and take the limits off muscle-mass gains.
Well, it's here — big time — ready to set you free from the gene that stands between you and your physique dreams. Neutralizing myostatin and taking the governor off muscle-mass limitations is now possible with Biotest's brand-new supplement, called...

MYOSTAT™ - Super-Transforming Growth Factor™

MYOSTAT could potentially redefine and change the muscle-building world forever! In fact, when it comes to building the ultimate physique, it could very well be one of the most important discoveries ever made. Think about it. Now you can successfully overcome the single biggest limiting factor — genetics!
Why wouldn't you want to experience it firsthand?
Bottom line, if you neutralise the effects of myostatin long enough, you can literally attain a much more-muscular and leaner condition than otherwise would be possible.
One of the major factors limiting your ability to gain muscle is, of course, genetics. Sports Scientists have recently isolated one particular gene that, through a protein called myostatin, actually turns off muscle growth. Since then, they have searched the world for a way to neutralize the effects of myostatin and take the limits off muscle-mass gains.

Neutralizing myostatin and taking the governor off muscle-mass limitations is now possible with Biotest Myostat

If you want to completely revolutionise your physique binding and thus neutralizing myostatin produces three incredibly powerful effects that nothing else can deliver:

Formation of New Muscle. Instead of causing muscles to grow larger through hypertrophy, you're actually forming brand-new muscle cells that will develop and incorporate into existing, mature muscle. And the longer you neutralize myostatin, the more new muscle mass you'll accumulate. Imagine that, actually accumulating muscle! Also, by increasing the actual number of muscle cells, the rate at which you actually grow will begin to accelerate over time, resulting in bigger and much faster gains!

Permanent Muscle Gains. Most of the time, gaining muscle is at best, three steps forward and two steps backward. This is because you're increasing muscle mass in a hyper-anabolic environment (in the body), which can't be sustained ad infinitum. Newly formed muscle cells, on the other hand, are permanent. This doesn't mean that the resulting muscle mass can't atrophy, but it does mean it can't disappear. It's for keeps!

Automatic Decrease in Body Fat. All of the animal studies show that decreased myostatin levels result in a lot less body fat. In fact, a study funded by the National Institutes of Health and conducted at Johns Hopkins University shows that animals with lower myostatin levels have anywhere from 33-50% less body fat, regardless of diet! Researchers indicate that this may be due to increased insulin sensitivity in skeletal muscle that's brought about by low levels of myostatin.

Bottom line, if you neutralize the effects of myostatin long enough, you can literally attain a much more-muscular, and leaner, condition that otherwise wouldn't be possible.

Of course, to maximize results, you have to eat optimally for gaining muscle mass and train hard. I can't stress this point enough. You can't just take a pill — any pill or injection, or anything else, for that matter — and get the physique you want. You have to work hard at it, be disciplined, and give it time.

And something else that should be mentioned is, if you include powerful anabolic compounds, like MAG-10, the entire building process is substantially accelerated. Binding myostatin in a super-anabolic environment is the way to go if you want maximum gains in the shortest amount of time. So, if you can afford to, go through a two-week MAG-10 cycle at least once every six weeks while using MYOSTAT.

If you don't want to use MAG-10, you should still follow the "MAG-10 Plan for Success" guidelines, except decrease total calories by 500 per day during the gaining phase.

the supplement busted (like prohormones and other scams off of drugs) but the drug is in use. Some pros are using a version of it now with good success for their goals.

I read that Ronnie Coleman was doing that, but the real-mcCoy that the pros use is far more expensive than HGH!

its extremely expensive and unlike cattle or mice, in humans it only adds a few percentage points to the mass (so far)... BUT it does add a few percentage points, which when your the pros size is a massive change!

Only thing about it, it grows all skelatal muscle, so the result is a strange look (gon ethe classic taper look for most). GH, Insulin and other drugs are simular to this, so training has become less of a factor than it used to be for these guys... "it is all in the drugs" takes on a new meaning. Soon it will be only a shot ot a pill to get fully like that.

This brings up a funny story. We once knew a "white" guy who did the bodypump aerobics with weights class and he was pretty massive (250 lean as in under 8%). He followed the diets, and drugs of a top BBer but only did this class for his training with puney light weights. This was freaky and showed that diet and drugs can play such a major role. I should go back to Philidelphia and see if this guy is still doing this. Would make for a great article.

if you have read any of the research on gene therepy it is pretty interesting to see what they have been doing with rats and mice -

essentialy they use a retro-virus as a carrier for the new DNA sequence - say for not being sensative to myostatin... the results are freaky to say the least... I've been told that we are about 5years off clynical trials and a good 10 years before it becomes available for treatment of things like Muscular distrophy....

but as Chef said in a few years time it will just be a case of taking a few shots and re-programming your genetic code.... hey that way we can be genetic freeks like flex wheeler!

one thing I am curious about is does myostatin only affect skeletal muscle or will it also influence things like the hart??

they,ve already had a baby born

Who has a myostatin gene deficiancy, sorry this was so long but i thought some of you might want to read it, if you havent already.

WEDNESDAY, June 23 (HealthDayNews) -- A German child born with unusually well-developed muscles has prompted researchers to study the child's genes and follow his growth and development.
The hope is that the boy's genetic profile might provide clues that could help in developing treatments for muscle-wasting diseases, such as muscular dystrophy.

In fact, the German researchers have already found that the child has a mutation in the gene that produces myostatin.

"Myostatin is a growth factor that regulates muscle mass during embryonal development as well as after birth. Myostatin prevents the muscles from growing too big," said one of the researchers, Dr. Markus Schuelke, a professor of molecular genetics and a principal investigator in the department of neuropediatrics at the Charite University Medical Center in Berlin.

The scientists report their discovery in the June 24 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

What's potentially exciting about finding this mutation in humans is that this research might help develop treatments for muscle-wasting diseases. Other studies have shown that when mice have their myostatin genes knocked out, their muscles grow to twice the size of other mice, according to Schuelke. But, he cautioned, long-term safety data isn't yet known, so any possible therapies for humans may be years away from development.

"Careful, long-term animal studies and observation of humans with myostatin mutations over a long period of time have to be done before [any potential therapies] may safely enter a clinical trial," he said.

The good news is that Schuelke and his colleagues have been able to follow the boy for almost five years, and he appears to suffer no ill effects from the lack of myostatin.

Schuelke first examined the boy when he was a newborn, and noticed the large muscles on the baby's upper legs and upper arms. Ultrasound examination confirmed that the child's muscles were about twice as large as would be expected. The baby otherwise appeared normal.

Other members of the child's family are reportedly stronger than average, but only the mother was available for DNA testing. His mother had been a professional athlete prior to becoming pregnant.

The researchers tested for possible causes for the over-developed muscles in the boy, such as an excess of testosterone or insulin-like growth factor and found no abnormal levels.

Because the baby's increased muscle was similar to that found in mice and in cattle lacking the gene that produces myostatin, the researchers checked the mother's and child's genetic profile. They discovered the mother had a mutation in one copy of the myostatin gene and that both copies of the baby's myostatin gene were defective. Humans inherit one copy of each gene from each parent.

The boy was 4 1/2 years old when the current study was completed. The researchers are concerned about ill effects the mutation might have on his heart muscle, but so far his cardiovascular system seems normal.

But Dr. Elizabeth McNally, director of cardiovascular research at the University of Chicago, said the boy is still very young and that problems could occur later in his life.

"The hope is that he's going to be fine. In large animal models, they seem to be OK," she said.

In an accompanying editorial in the same issue of the journal, McNally said that "this study documents how effective this pathway [for muscle growth] can be in humans, and my hope for this pathway is that it will be helpful for treating people with degenerative disorders."

However, McNally also expressed concern that people may use any potential treatments for developing muscles for non-medical uses.

"We don't know the long-term medical consequences. If you have a disease like muscular dystrophy, then the benefits outweigh the potential risks," McNally said.

But, she added, that's not the case for athletes or others trying to develop large muscles. "You can see from the history of steroid use, people will do things to grow muscle even though there are negative consequences."

the testing in humans (non public) began about 5 years ago for the military and some say the designers were using it in the late 80's. I'd say in less than 5 public trials will start. So far its a temp effect and the sides are insanity and mental issues more than phyiscal symptoms. The new but permanent effect on gentics is... now they take a new partial code and shoot it through a cell and the cell catches parts of the new gene this allows certain key cells to pick it up and over a period of time actually starts to take on that code. As far as the viral approach on myostatin, there are two drugs in testing now and I'd bet a few pros are using that work via skelatal muscle only. The last paper I found on these said no effect on the heart (or other non skelatal muscles) directly but a deformity of other organs was happening. Only time will tell.

Word is several guys have had intestines removed my micro surgery recently so look for some pros to start to have waists again. LOL If you want to know how much chem they are using... look at the skelatal muscles they don't lift with weights but are massive on these guys.

I wonder where this will all go. We know the reason the military is looking into it is tissue wasting, not size as the ideal soilder is 6 foot tall and 230 lbs anything larger and it screws with endurance and function in combat. (heightv to weight related from 5'6" to 6'6") So they are limiting how they approach it. Who knows maybe we will have 6 foot tall 400 lb freaks soon.
