Creatine and Guiness

First time in a while, thought I'd let you know Im still alive, and tell you about last night...

Been on creatine for about 3 weeks now, and I have to say this stuff is the bomb. It works for me, and works well. It is, however, similar to most things in life, not just bbing, in that results vary.

Now, couple of days ago I decided to experiment (being a scientist) and tried taking half the dose (of 5g a day) in the morning and then the other half PWO. This, I have to say, worked well. Boyed by the success of the first trial I decided to split all the doses into two, to reduce run off as descirbed in other threads. Now, this meant that I was taking a little dose about 2 hours before bed, around say 9.30. Decided to go for a couple of beers last night. Some of you may remember that I posted a thread a little while back about getting dizzy and so forth...

Well, it seemed that this mix of Guiness and Creatine brings on a state known as sleep paralysis, where essentially you are asleep, but your brain is wide awake. This means your conscious but dreaming, which I can now confirm first hand is not a pleasant experience. Subsequent to this I have been dizzy and reporting the same symptoms as before. So it seems that creatine and alcohol mix to form some kind of horror which should be steared clear of. Being a scientist, I intend to repeat the experiment again tonight and record results. The upshot of all this is that if you find yourself with similar symptoms, then this may well be the cause. Hope this adds to the fountain of knowledge,
John

Damn and I thought you were going to come up with something that meant I could drink more guiness and have an excuse :p

Thats some nasty stuff your experiencing. If your not sleeping properly then your not resting, and your gains will suffer, which kind of makes taking the creatine pointless?

I wonder if it was just a one off?

Interesting. Will be intrigued to hear more.

Cant say I ever had a problem though - and when I was at uni I drank an awful lot of guinness and was usually taking creatine. Perhaps I never took them close enough together to experience this kind of effect.

Yeah a little wierd. Since starting on Trib I sleep like a baby 9/10 nights, way better than I used to. Reading up on this phenomenon and apparently ANY change to your normal sleeping habits can trigger it...and laying on your back. Also reported is outer body experiances, which start in this way, Ill keep you posted...

RipCord will become famous soon enough
I have experienced the same thing Parti. When i first ventured into BB i knew nothing about it and thought i knew it all. I would only take creatine mornings at 5g and 5-8g post workout. (no other protein and my diet was $HIT!!!) for 3 months it would be school all day, gym, creatine, then anywhere from 8 to 14 beers...i had that terrible experience so many nights and could never figure it out. I have never touched creatine since and shaped up my BB lifestyle considerably.

Wow - proper old school weight gain. They used to put a lot of people on that kind of mix. Remember seeing a Bryan Robson documentary years ago and when he was a young triallist at West Brom they had him drink a Guinness and egg mix each day to bulk him up.

I went into a gym in Wolverhampton about four years ago and the owner (who looked seriously like Mr T) also told me how he drank guiness and eggs - and then unfortunately didnt spare me any of the gruesome details of what it did to his digestive system....

They still advertise in some countries that guinness is good for you - I remember seeing adverts like that when I went to St Lucia in 2002. Why is it that people believe Guinness to be good for the health? Anyone know? Believe me, I wish it was....

Man, Guiness is good for you!! All that water and iron...you have to remember though, Guiness is found only in Ireland. Everywhere else its black dish water. Apart from a pub called the Mother Redcap in Archway...

Have to edit in the spirit of the Guiness is good for you. You should go to the Guiness brewery in Dublin and read the accounts of all the 1800's doctors who prescribe it for all sorts of things, cant think of many of them except that one gives it out as a cure for 'insomnia and other ailments of the sleep'. One guy is going on about how its cured his chronic consitaption, while another praises it as a cure for diohhrea (SP). Awesome.

Repeated experiment last night, but no episode. Will keep you all posted as to further developments.
