Protein at 3am?

This may seem like quite a stupid question but i rember hearing it a while ago i dont know where and who from. Basically i think the jist was it is a good idea to get up in the early hours of the morning in the middle of your sleep and have an intake of protein such as a protein shake. Anyone else heard of this before or know of any benefits from doing it? Ive been trying it since monday but i havent managed to do it yet, keep turning the alarm off in my sleep :(

Re: Protein at 3am?

some people do others dont bother, sleep is more important to them. You might as well have a caesin shake or cottage cheese before bed. The slow release proteins should be alright for you over night.

Re: Protein at 3am?

Have haerd the same...I think most ppl get up in the middle of the night to relieve themselves of bodily fluid and that is the recommended time to get it that extra protein you are looking for IMHO if you can pull it off it will only benefit...as we all know our body is looking for that protein every 3 hrs. or so and most sleep for 8. Make sure you are getting your slow release of protein from your last meal that will help get you through the night...

Re: Protein at 3am?

the theory behind it is sound i.e never going more than 3-4 hours without protein...positive nitrogen balance and tada...more muscle apparently, but i like my sleep too much, and rest is an important part of growing too. so a beast of a casein shake before bed does for me

Re: Protein at 3am?

I tried it for awhile. Became habbit and with the full stomach I fell back to sleep.. not much to gain from it really for what it's worth.

yeah a caesin shake of some sort before you go to bed will do for at least 3 hrs, as the body takes this long to digest it, same if you take a good dose of Cottage chesse.

But to be honest id rather have a good deep sleep, than have my alarm going off for a shake.

Fat is not a problem

If you get a chance google the 'Boire' study on protein digestion rates

I certainly wouldnt get up by design to drink protein though

Re: Protein at 3am?

What Geo said. As I work 12 hour days and do 1.30hrs in the gym, waking up in the night is only if I need to go for a pee.

To tired for a protein shake.

Re: Protein at 3am?

As said, I would have a slow releasing shake or a couple of boiled eggs + cottage cheese before bed - Fat+protein = slower digestion, cottage cheese = caesin protein = slower digestion....... I know people that have a shake made up and leave it by the bed and one who used to leave it by the loo so if he woke up to pee he would have some but would not wake up on purpose..

IMO sleep is more important. Plus, if your eating protein every 2 to 3 hours through the day, I would think your body will enjoy the rest it gets while sleeping..................

Re: Protein at 3am?

When dieting I sometimes set myself a protein pudding or shake to have when I wake up (as I always do) during the night.

If I dont then I just have it in the morning at breakfast.

I dont think its really necessary during off season but on diet its quite useful to keep the metabolism burining.
