Music As A Supplement

Just common sense stuff really, but I thought I'd back up what we all know with a bit of science. A lot of people come online looking for supplements to help them with their training when they may infact already have everything they need at their finger tips.

Increased performance doesn't always need to come in the form of a pill.

Listening to music while exercising can increase adrenaline, increased adrenaline can make you Harder/Better/Faster/Stronger.

So if you are struggling with a lift - start using a generic iPod with something that will get you going and pysched up and smash that PB :lift:

Some times the simple stuff just works.

The sciencey bit: For 'Adrenaline' read norepinephrine, catecholamine(s) and norepinephrine.

We examined the effects of listening to headphone music in ten well trained men (25.1 +/- 6 years) during treadmill running. Maximal oxygen consumption, determined by open circuit spirometry, was followed by two submaximal work bouts 72 hours apart. The work bouts consisted of a supine rest, a 15 minute run at 70% of maximal oxygen consumption, and a three minute active recovery period. Participants listened to music during one of the two trials. Hemodynamic variables and perceived exertion were recorded at three minute intervals during each trial. A venous blood sample, obtained prior to and following each trial, was assayed for norepinephrine and plasma lactate. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences (p < 0.05) between the no music versus the exercise with music trial for (aggregate data 3,6,9,12,15 minutes): heart rate 152.9 +/- 5.3 to 145.9 +/- 4.7 beats x min(-1); systolic blood pressure, 158.1 +/- 3.7 to 151.7 +/- 3.3 mmHg; rate-pressure product 242.2 +/- 11.5 to 222.1 +/- 11.4; exercise lactate 2.75 +/- 0.15 to 2.13 +/- 0.18 mmol x l(-1); and perceived exertion 14.4 +/- 0.4 to 12.9 +/- 0.4. A 17.5% lower level of norepinephrine (841.5 +/- 314.7 to 694.1 +/- 254.5 pg x ml[-1]) in the exercise and music trial was not statistically significant (p<0.05); however a moderate effect size (ES = 0.52) was calculated and may be of practical significance considering the variability of the sample. Higher values for hemodynamics and lactate in the no music trial is suggestive of a greater metabolic demand; however, oxygen consumption was not different. Perhaps the music allowed individuals to relax reducing muscle tension thereby increasing blood flow and lactate clearance while decreasing lactate production in working muscle. The combined results of this study suggest the introduction of music has a psychobiological impact on the exerciser demonstrated by changes in perceived effort, lactate and norepinephrine.

Few data exist on the temporal relationship between catecholamines and muscle force production in vivo. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of preexercise arousal on sympathoadrenal neurohormones on muscular force expression during resistance exercise. Ten resistance-trained men completed two experimental conditions separated by 7 days: 1) acute heavy resistance exercise protocol (AHREP; 6 x 10 repetitions parallel squats, 80% 1 repetition maximum) and 2) control (Cont; rest). Peak force (F(peak)) was recorded during a maximal isometric squat preceding each set and mean force (F(mean)) was measured during each set. Serial venous blood samples were collected before the AHREP and immediately preceding each set. Blood collection times were matched during Cont. Preexercise epinephrine (Epi), norepinephrine (NE), and dopamine (DA) increased (P or= 0.05) in muscular performance (F(peak), F(mean)) during AHREP and that five subjects (F(reducers)) had significant reductions in F(peak) and F(mean). Integrated area under the curve for Epi, NE, and F(peak) were greater (P < 0.02) for F(maintainers) than F(reducers). In conclusion, an anticipatory rise in catecholamines existed, which may be essential for optimal force production at the onset of exercise.

Yeah this is fairly common knowledge.

I think my boss was telling me that he had to research a study done on 3 people that all play sports and were the same age - all males.

Had to go on a static cycle for 24hrs with nothing but water or energy bars, one dude was given a few books, another an MP3 player with dance tracks and the last guy had nothing.

They were all wired up and chemicals, sweat pathways, the bikes speeds etc were taken.....long and short of it was guy with MP3 player worked FAR harder than the other 2 guys.

hmm I may be different but for me lifting heavy requires a good deal of concentration. Loud music would be a hinderance and possibly dangerous for me. I may get too aggressive and lift more than my fragile structure can bear >> end up :rip: or :crutch: But I do listen to loud and aggressive music while en route to the gym.

raps best workout music! abit of 50 cent or tupac to get ya angry helps bang out the reps! my gym owner only plays really old tunes though :( he wont even put rocky on!!!

My favorite music probably to listen to when doing a workout is probably some sort of either rock or heavy metal but again thats just personal opinion!

I'm not that surprised really. Music is emotive - a favourite song or something that brings back happy memories or just something that gets us going. Happens all the time.
