Just got the latest mail shot in the post, and promax is britain's No 1 selling protein power. Hands up tried it once years ago, but tasted like sh!t to me. So who is buying it to claim its No 1. Where are these people!!!!!

tesco and argos are buying it.....

it all depends on where you measure sales..... if you measure manufacturer to retailer rather than retailer to end user then your figures can be somewhat distorted.

Exactly - are they measuring sales to wholesalers and retailers, or sales to users? Are they measuring volume or income? If it's income, well MM is overpriced in the first place, which will further distort the figures.

They are sold in Argos and Boots, so the average Joe who decides he wants to go on a health kick will buy it rather than looking for other options. Also, remember the huge Maximuscle pull outs in Mens Health mags, which have quite a large readership, most of them not into bodybuilding per se, so won't check out sites like this for options.

I've never tried Promax myself but hear it's disgusting. That said, Maximuscle may be overpriced, but i wouldn't ever doubt its quality.

Why would they be different? Surely they only order what they sell!

People who want to start training and don't visit forums like this one get sucked into the marketing hype and see it in supermarkets. That's why they are the number one seller.

Just gave me the sh*ts!! And I remember paying £90 odd quid for 3 tubs - and that was an offer! Oh, how I have learnt since joining this forum!

Nope - you have to forecast demand, which in food retail especially is like one of the black arts. Plus, with longer-life dry goods you generally have slightly more than forecast to meet unexpected demand. Finally, Argos has a deal with manufacturers where they only pay for the units they actually sell, and at the end of each catalogue unsold items are RTM (returned to manufacturer).

Surprising as it may seem, I would say Promax probably is easily the #1 selling protein in the UK. Maximuscle just have such a large market share and its all about the level of market penetration they've achieved. They have got sports nutrition stocked in places that would never have previously considered it (although Sci-Mx/USN also did incredibly well to get stocked in Harrods). As much as I'm not Maximuscle's biggest fan, they are really doing the whole sports nutrition market a massive service and helping make supplements more mainstream than they've ever been before.
