pre post and during shake

What do your pre post and during shakes consist of ?
Have been readin a fair bit online today about the importance of a shake during training. I have also seen that Milos sarcev is a big advocate of this type of nutrition

Re: pre post and during shake

I just used a protocol I used for a 16 week strength program which used:

Pre workout (20mins prior)
Carbs 40g
Protein 8g
Additional
Caffeine
DMAE
Leucine
Iso-Leucine
Valine
Tyrosine
Glutamine
B6
AKG
Creatine Mono
Gingko Biloba
Sida
and a few other things

During 1st Half
37g Mixed Pro 18gCho 3.7gFat
Creatine, Glutamine Taurine
During 2nd Half (Long WO due to strength structure)
Carb/EAA
37g Cho 1g Pro (Leucine, Iso-leucine Valine, Glutamine)

Immediately Post
37g Mixed Pro 18gCho 3.7gFat
Creatine, Glutamine Taurine
+ additional 20g Whey and 15g Leucine.

About 1200cals in total.

Mixture of Olympic lifts, compounds and Assistance work.

My bodyweight didnt move much 2-3kg up over 16 weeks.

Deadlift at start 216RM end 250RM

BIG fan of during WO supplementation.

Carbs and EAA are the most important in most cases (Goal dependant of course)

Re: pre post and during shake

Too many people get caught up in what to have before during and after. As long as glycogen levels are high, and blood amino acid levels are adequate you're good to go.

During workout nutrition makes no sense. During training blood is diverted away from the GI tract, to meet requirements in the muscles and to the skin to cool us. Hence absorption of nutrients is slowed massively, even giving cramps or spasms if the stomach is too full. Digestion and absorption will only return to full efficiency when heart rate has returned to normal and resting blood distribution has returned.

The only athletes who should take in macros during training are endurance athletes. A weights session only lasts 45mins to and hour. Nutrition in the meals before training should be adequate enough to fuel this and keep you anabolic. remember, it's not what is in your stomach that fuels you, it's what is in the blood, and that comes from the meals in the hours before training.

After training we need insulin in large amounts. So, high GI carbs and protein for anabolism.

None of my pals who compete, and one is doing the Universe, faff around with before and during workout supplementation. I've saw it quoted on here that Jay Cutler even goes for white fish and rice PWO whilst dieting. All the lotions and potions just arent needed mate.

I agree with this.
My diet is quality real food, i would rather spend my money on that.
However i do use 100g of pure maltodextrin in a pint of green top 45mins PWO.
Then 50g malto and 50g pure whey in the other pint within 45mins after.

Understand exactly what you're saying Pauly.

Thats exactly why I pointed out that mine wasn't a bodybuilding workout.
When you rest periods are between 3-5 minutes and the total workout lasts 1:30-2:00 hours. To ignore 'During' workout nutrition would be crazy. It is also noted that the liquid is gulped to increase GI emptying time and feeling bloated.

Remember that the protocol in context to what it's intentions are.

Phil

Dan, you don't *need* a shake before going to the gym ;)

You simply need to have enough energy for your workout.

Re: pre post and during shake

I have Pre and Post Workout 'meals'.

Pre to ensure I have enough energy in me to complete the workout.

Post to aid muscle growth.

During ... hmmm.... I already nearly throw up while I'm there, that would just guarantee it.

Agree fully with this. You should eat every couple of hours throught the day to keep your body fuelled. PWO carbs are the only time you need to worry about extra nutrition, I use Pro-Recover for this, simply its an all in mix and it is easy for me to use as it mixes well in a shaker with water.

I will sometimes use a pre workout drink (Pro-GF) but only when i'm not on gear (but this is more mental than anything else).
