Urology 2001 Jan;57(1):26-9 Related Articles, Books, LinkOut Dietary supplementation with cranberry concentrate tablets may increase the risk of nephrolithiasis. Terris MK, Issa MM, Tacker JR. Department of Urology, Stanford University Medical Center, Stanford, California, USA. OBJECTIVES: Cranberry juice has been recommended for patients with recurrent urinary tract infections. However, cranberry juice has a moderately high concentration of oxalate, a common component of kidney stones, and should be limited in patients with a history of nephrolithiasis. Cranberry concentrate tablets are currently available at nutrition stores and are sold as promoters of urinary tract health. After one of our patients with a distant history of calcium oxalate nephrolithiasis developed recurrent stones following self-administration of cranberry concentrate tablets, we sought to investigate the potential lithogenic properties of cranberry supplements. METHODS: Five healthy volunteers on a normal diet provided 24-hour urine collection for pH, volume, creatinine, oxalate, calcium, phosphate, uric acid, sodium, citrate, magnesium, and potassium. Cranberry tablets were administered to these volunteers at the manufacturer's recommended dosage for 7 days. On the seventh day, a second 24-hour urine collection was obtained. RESULTS: The urinary oxalate levels in the volunteers significantly increased (P = 0.01) by an average of 43.4% while receiving cranberry tablets. The excretion of potential lithogenic ions calcium, phosphate, and sodium also increased. However, inhibitors of stone formation, magnesium and potassium, rose as well. CONCLUSIONS: Cranberry concentrate tablets are marketed for urinary tract ailments. Physicians and manufacturers of cranberry products should make an effort to educate patients at risk for nephrolithiasis against ingestion of these dietary supplements. |

I use Cranberry all the time and have never had any problems. However one of my friends was suing it and got a few kidney stones. I put him on Green Tea 3 cups a day and the stones disappeared.

There does seem to be a genetic link, and men are twice as likely to get them as women. Truly nasty beasts, those stones! We do get them in the lab, we don't analyse them for the composition any more, send them on, however, there are a few you think, OMG they picked that up off their drive! I will try and find my paper and post it! x x x T |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Here is what I know about kidney stones. I suspect that green tea keeps the urine acidic. Improper protein utilization is part of the cause of kidney stones. But it is the deficency of B6, magnesium, calcium or vitamin D that causes this improper protein utilization. Some kidney stones can be formed from the amino acid cystine or from uric acid. To prevent these stones, large amounts of citrus fruits and vegetables should be eaten to keep the urine alkaline; HOWEVER, these stones are not the common stones. If you find out you have one of these stones let me know I have a diet for you. The common stones, oxylyic and phosphate, are caused when the urine is too alkaline. Normally citric acid, synthesized from carbohydrate, is formed in the body to keep the urine acidic which in turn keeps the minerals and oxcylic acid in solution. If magnesium is lacking, enough citric acid can't be produced. A B6 deficency can cause a large increase in oxcylic acid content of the urine. In the US we tend to have a magnesium deficiency so we have more calcium phosphate stones. In UK you tend to have B6 deficencies and so tend to have oxlate stones. The amino acid glycine is improperly utilized when there is a B6 dificency and forms oxcylic acid. Calcium can be excessively excreted if there is not enough vitamin D. The bottom line is the following daily recommendation by a respected nutritionisth. For those who have tendency towards kidney stones Daily supplements 2500 mg Ca/1250 mg Mg Always have your Calcium and Magnesium at a 2:1 ratio 250mg Mg 20mg B6 Vitamin D (a good multivitamin will have that) phosphorus (bb diets are sufficient in this) Eat more citrus fruit and green leafy vegetables!!! B6 is also needed for proper protein absorption. How strong is your green tea, TT? Last edited by Peg; 04-09-2006 at 07:53 PM. |
