| Newbie Trainer | Very interesting article in Men's Health Magazine this month (p38). Apparently, I quote " tests carried out by Iowa State University on over 250 vitamins, minerals and sports supplements found that only HMB and Creatine will build muscle mass and strength. Creatine fools the body into supplying extra protein to the muscles giving them more of the amino acids required for growth. HMB prevents the extent of muscle tissue damage during strenuous exercise. Added to a strength training routine, a combination of HMB and creatine increase muscle growth by 200 % more than strength training alone, says Steve Nissen, the lead study author. For best results take each supplement twice a day" Hmmm. |

HMB is produced in our bodies (HMB is an acronym for beta-hydroxy beta-methylbutyrate) and is a metabolite of the BCAA (branched chain amino acid) leucine. We also get HMB in our diets from consuming certain foods including catfish, alfalfa and grapefruit for example. HMB may help with the following: -aid in the ability to build muscle in response to weight training or other strenuous exercise (increased muscle size and strength) -aid in the ability to burn fat in response to strenuous exercise -increase aerobic ability (increase a person's VO2max) -help recover form strenuous exercise by reducing the amount of lactate released. -lower cholesterol levels -decrease blood pressure

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I've used HMB twice previously, each time made good gains and dropped BF, i honestly thought it was just a plecebo making me train harder coz i've heard so many people say it doesn't work. Gonna try it again for a month - i'll keep you posted. |

Its one of those things that works 'in theory' but rarely in the real world. Very few people get results from it. You must be one of the lucky ones! ![]() L

Haven't read the article so I don't know what supplements were tested but what about Protein itself as a supplement? *The* muscle builder! or L-Glutamine? Another point to remember is that not all supplements build mass directly but help to create a better environment with which to work in (eg Energy Supplements, Anti-Oxidants etc) Sportsup http://www.sports-supplements.co.uk
