Protein Supplements

Hi guys, I'm just curious as to how much protein I should be consuming everyday. Due to being a student, protein shakes sound like a quick and easy way to stay on top of things. How much (gram wise) should a 150lb male like me be consuming if I am working on staying lean and building muscle at the same time? What protein powder is the best as well? I'm in the states, so hopefully it'll be accessible there.

Oh yea, does it matter how you mix the shake as well?

Thanks,
Jon

Hi Jon
The amount of protein you need is still very much in debate but a good guide is to get at least 1g per lb of body weight up to a max of 1.5g so for you about 150 - 225g per day , Don't get all your protein from shakes though ( dang I shouldn't be saying that should I ? ) but try to get as much as possible from whole food sources and then use Shakes to make up the difference and for convenience .. Most shakes mix very well these days either in a Shaker cup or Blender there is not excuse for a poorly mixing shake IMO so avoid ones that don't mix easily and well

Hope that helps ;-)

I rarely have protein 'shakes' in all honesty except after training.

Usually my protien goes in

!. Morning oats-choc or vanilla
2.low fat yogurt or soya yogurt with strawberries or raspberries-vanilla
3. mixed really thick so it is like a pudding late at night before bed.

So I do have about 100 g of protein/day in whey. But I am also a competitive BBer and weigh about the same as you right now. And I am quite ickle, like 160 cm under 5 foot 4!

I also eat about 1lb of chicken or turkey breasts a day!

I do vary with tofu, eggs, sometimes steak, just not keen on the tuna thing!
