Belts / Suits / Straps.... when are they needed?

Hey guys. I was just wondering what the use of the belts you see people wearing is? I'm guessing they just help give support and keep the back straight or something but thought would be interesting to know..

Also when is it recommended to invest in a belt? Just wondering if it is worth getting one now my Squat and DL are getting abit higher. Thanks

Personal preference really, I used to deadlift in a belt but found it just got in the way really! Still squat with a belt though.
What are your figures for both out of interest??

Re: Belts / Suits / Straps.... when are they needed?

Alot guys will give you grief for using belts or straps.

Ignore them.

Don't worry about suits - not needed at your level Liam IMHO.

You can get a belt if you think need it. Straps are used when the grip is the weak link in the chain.

Again - alot of people will say no straps/no gloves or whatever. My opinion is that if your weak grip (a small muscle) is stopping your back (a big muscle) from growing then use some straps to keep back growth progressing - but do train your grip as well.

Let the flaming commence...

Agreed on the straps as my grip is poor but I am damned if I am letting it hinder my back progress!!
Started to train my grip, but have you got any good exercises TH?

I agree with Tall - I happily use straps when my grip gives out, though I've never used a belt. For one, I doubt they make them in my size

Grip training - sets of 6s are great

Plate pinches - two plates held together in one hand - start with 10kgs, 15kgs are tough - 20kgs together is nigh on impossible for mortals

Deadlifts, especially thick bar deads.

Double over hand holds out of a rack - aim to fail around 30-45 second mark - don't rest on your thighs

Captains of Crushers - google em'

Back work without straps

Do leverage work with a sledge hammer, start with hand close to the hammer and move out progressively

I am the proud owner of a pair of straps too - they only come out for power shrugs though.

Re: Belts / Suits / Straps.... when are they needed?

Dont like belts as there more uncomfortable than anything..my m8 uses one when heavy squatting to help keep a nice tight mid section but personally dont like them..Straps I solely use for to go heavier with weight,of course your grip goes the heavier you go but mainly use it to get my max and concentrate more on my lifting than having to worry about losing my grip...They arent a bad thing as you are still lifting the weight and grip wont be an issue..
