What are your views on drug testing in the workplace?

I found this on thesite.org..... what do you think?

Question

The company I work for do random drugs test. I don't take any recreational drugs but am on steroids for body building - would these show up on the test?

Answer

Anabolic steroids are Class C drugs that do show up in drugs tests. If you have obtained them legally, through a pharmacist with a doctor's prescription, then you can explain this to your employer. Possession without prescription isn't illegal but supplying steroids (even for free) carries penalties including imprisonment.
While steroids do help to build the body's tissues, there are serious health risks associated with their use, including heart and liver problems. Most anabolic steroids are banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency, the body that regulates the use of drugs in sport.

Is your opinion the same if the worker being tested is driving a truck, or operating on a human body or a policeman etc? (example)

I doubt they test for steroids. They have to run tests for certain drugs dont they. Most likely marijuana, coke etc... etc...

Besides it's not illegal to use steroids here so they can mind their own fvcking business!!

Re: What are your views on drug testing in the workplace?

The answer above is technically true if they were choosing to test for them. Whether they will or not I guess is dependent on your job. It's not likely though for the majority of positions.

I'm very much against the idea of routine drug testing for jobs where there's no risk to the public, but unfortunately it seems to be on the rise.

Yes they will probably only test for recreational drugs - I believe it costs per substance they test for (as each is a seperate test and use of lab time etc) so they generally only test for the commonly taken substances.
