Your doctor wants to assess if your body is capable of producing normal amounts cortisol when stimulated by ACTH. Synacthen is used as it is a synthetic drug mimics ACTH. If your body responds to synacthen then it would imply that your cortisol is low due to pituitary cause i.e it is not producing ACTH. If it does not respond as it should, then it would mean your adrenal glands have a problem.

Is the MRI for your adrenal gland / pituitary?

Post all your blood results

Re: MRI scan/synacthen tset

I had a Short Synacthen Test 2 days ago.
I'd previously tested seriously low for T.
The SST is used to take a look at the response of the adrenals and cotisol production.
When they do the SST they test all the hormonal related stuff too - lipids, fsh, lh, E, prolactin etc.
They do MRIs in these circumstances to investigate the possibility of pituitary tumours (among other things). Apart from that, I don't know. Haven't had the MRI yet.

Simply put, they're most likely trying to figure out the cause of the low T levels, of which there are many. Once cause is determined, they can treat it appropriately.

Good luck.

Re: MRI scan/synacthen tset

ye thats why its a good idea to tell them anything that might cause this such as AAS, My partner died of a brain tumor while stuck on a seven month waiting list for an MRI scan, and when I pointed this out to the so called consultant, she said I was being ridiculous to say it was seven months wait for an MRI scan, she was then told by the arbitraitor that there was a seven month waiting list, she said nothing after that...

Re: MRI scan/synacthen tset

I had an MRI scan, with a contrast injection, of my pituitary done when blood tests showed virtually no testosterone and very high prolactin.

I have another scan due in January to see if the Cabagoline has shrunk the bening tumour they found. Proactin has dropped to mid normal range, testosterone is rising, but my LFTs are elevated and antibodies are low..this coupled with a heart problem they have discovered means i need to come off the Cabagoline....so they may now remove it by surgery.
