| Below is a summary of information gathered on R-ALA , ALA , & Biotin. It seems r-ala is taken in lower doses than ala (and that biotin should be taken to avoid dry skin and hair loss). What do you guys think , have you ever had biotin or know where to get it? Q. What is Biotin? A. Vitamin H its a cofactor that must be supplemented with lipoic acid (either R+ or "dirty" racemic r/s mix).. Take 100mg of r-ala 4-6 times a day with biotin. Best taken before meals. Make sure it is r-ala and not just ala. your liver is being damaged the most while the 17aa steriod dbol is in your system. ALSO OF EXTREMELY IMPORTANT VALUE. IT HELPS REGENERATE LIVER TISSUE WHEN NOTHING ELSE WILL. This includes Milk Thistle, Cranberry extract, and all the other popular liver protectants Common dosage is 200mg 3 times a day. R-ALA depletes intra-cellular biotin. Once this happens there is a minimal decrease in glucose sensitivity that the cells can take up. The user also experiences dry skin, bad joints etc... SO, with just supplemmenting 1-2mg 3X/day of Biotin you normalize your glucose sensitivity and get rid of all the problems associated with low intra-cellular biotin levels. ALA or Alpha Lipoic Acid is actually a racemic mix of two different isomers, R-ALA, and S-ALA. R-ALA is a naturally occurring form of ALA which can be found in very small quantities in the body and in the foods we eat, whereas S-ALA is a synthetic version created during the manufacturing process. Most ALA preparations that you can buy on the market (unless stated otherwise) are a 50/50 mix of these two isomers. ALA is somewhat of a universal supplement for those training to improve their physiques as it has many roles which suit a variety of different goals. Here are the main uses: - As a preventative or restorative aid for the liver - As a dieting aid to increase fat loss - As a bulking aid to decrease fat accumulation ALA as a preventative or restorative aid for the liver: ALA is known (amongst other things) as a natural antioxidant, and its use is fairly widespread in Europe due to its ability to maintain and restore liver health. So far ALA has been used for the treatment of radiation poisoning, mushroom poisoning (2), alcoholic hepatitis (3), diabetes related neuropathy and elevated liver enzymes. This is extremely useful for any athlete whose liver is being stressed due to any number of factors. In these cases a dosage of 1g ALA per day (two 500mg capsules) taken in split dosages immediately before meals (preferably carbohydrate containing) would be enough to help ward off any damage that could be done, or repair any damage that has already been done to the liver. If an athlete would like to 'supercharge' their liver protection they can use the following combination: Alpha Lipoic Acid - 1g per day Silymarin (Milk Thistle) - 400mg per day Selenium - 800mcg per day This combination was actually used in patients with cirrhosis, portal hypertension and oesophageal varices secondary to chronic hepatitis C infection, which are all extremely bad conditions for the liver. This combination managed to stave off the approaching requirement for liver transplant surgery (1). In Part 2 , I'll go over ALA's uses in both dieting and bulking for accelerating fat loss, or minimising fat gain. References: 1. New treatments for hepatitis B and C [antigen-specific transfer for A, B & C (chisolm biologicals) and thymate]. Konlee M. Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) for Physique Conscious Athletes (Part 2) 2/1/2003 In Part 1 I wrote about ALA's liver protection benefits. In Part 2 I'll go on to explain how it can be used in both dieting and bulking to create a more favourable muscle retention/fat loss ratio when dieting, and a more favourable muscle gain/fat gain ratio when bulking. ALA is known for many beneficial effects regarding crucial factors in lipid metabolism. It is known to lower blood glucose (1), and can reduce insulin resistance (2) in those with less than perfect insulin management capabilities, which can especially be brought on by low caloric intake (3). A good intake of ALA would be 3000mg per day, spread over 6 meals. You would take 500mg immediately before eating each meal. Your caloric intake must be below maintenance for best effects. People have found that with this regimen, they could actually eat carbs, yet still enter ketosis! This is due to lowered blood glucose with the addition of ALA. As well as ALA's effects on lipid metabolism above, we need to understand that during a traditional bulking period, carbs, and therefore insulin levels, are high for the entire day, creating a high insulin environment not dissimilar to insulin resistance, which we know can be helped with ALA (3). As well as this ALA also has the ability to increase the amount of GLUT4 transporters on the outside of the muscle cells (4). This allows more nutrients to be stored in muscle cells as opposed to fat cells, the net result being more muscle, less fat! Once again an excellent regimen to reap these benefits would be 3000mg per day, spread over 6 meals. You would take 500mg immediately before eating each meal. Your caloric intake must be above maintenance for the desired effects. To put a figure on how much ALA would affect your body composition on a bulking period here is an example: If a person gains 10lbs of muscle and 10lbs of fat usually in a bulking cycle without ALA. They are likely to gain around 14lbs of muscle and 6lbs fat if they would have taken ALA. ALA and/or CLA Recommended Dosages 4/2/2003 Wondering exactly how much of our ALA and/or CLA to take to achieve certain effects? Well here you go! First of all I would like to note that ALA and CLA are better absorbed when taken with food, so make sure you take them immediately before a meal. Using ALA for Liver Protection „h 500mg (1 capsule) with your first meal of the day „h 500mg (1 capsule) with your last meal of the day Using ALA alone for Body Composition Enhancement (less fat, more muscle!) when dieting or bulking „h 3000mg (6 capsules) per day split over all your meals „h If you were to eat 6 times a day, you would have one capsule per meal „h If you were to eat 3 times a day, you would have two capsules per meal „h If you were to eat 4 times a day, you would have two capsules with two meals and one capsule with two meals Using CLA alone for Body Composition Enhancement (less fat, more muscle!) when dieting or bulking „h 8000mg (8 capsules) per day split over all your meals „h If you were to eat 6 times a day, you would have two capsules with two meals and one capsule with 4 meals „h If you were to eat 3 times a day, you would have three capsules with two meals, and two capsules with the third meal „h If you were to eat 4 times a day, you would have two capsules with each meal Using CLA and ALA together for Body Composition Enhancement (less fat, more muscle!) when dieting or bulking „h 8000mg of CLA (8 capsules) per day split over all your meals „h 1500mg of ALA (3 capsules) per day split over the three meals closest to your workout on training days, or throughout the day on non training days „h If you were to eat 6 times a day, you would have two capsules of CLA with two meals and one capsule of CLA with 4 meals. You could take the three ALA capsules at any time (with a meal) on your non training days, however on training days you should have one with the meal closest to your training, one with your postworkout meal, then another with your second meal post workout „h If you were to eat 3 times a day, you would have three capsules of CLA with two meals, and two capsules of CLA with the third meal. You would take one capsule of ALA with each meal. „h If you were to eat 4 times a day, you would have two capsules of CLA with each meal. You could take the three ALA capsules at any time (with a meal) on your non training days, however on training days you should have one with the meal closest to your training, one with your postworkout meal, then another with your second meal post workout. If you don't have a second meal post workout, you could take the third capsule of ALA earlier in the day. |
