Re: Rightyho

Yah, chin up mate, I have seen your pictures and you look awesome.
I bet you still looked better than you think.

So, did you get second or third?

Alcohol is a mild diruetic, could you have had a shot or two and would that have helped?
Just askin.

I remember for the hell of it I tried one of my Moms lasix and I could not leave the house as I had to urinate every 5-10 minutes, I could not leave to go home as it is a 20 min drive.
That stuff is pretty serious.

I think you are being a bit hard on yourself and id bet money you probably looked awesome.

Re: Rightyho

righty i am sorry to hear what happened to you but rest assured it is only a waste if you do not learn from it...

we have all made mistakes i have been in this game for 16yrs and competed in 25 shows you would think that i would never make any mistakes but i made a huge one at the finals this year mate in trying to be 1% better than my qualifier i was 10% worse and due to diuretics(not lasix) was to flat at the show.....both Paul B and James L will tell you i dropped alot of fluid over night......
the only thing i can say mate is don't be to hard on yourself pick your self up treat your G/F like a queen for a while and get back down to business with a new found focus....

Re: Rightyho

Little consolation I'm sure after so much hard work, but look how much you learned in prepping for this compeition, even though it went sh*tty due to some Lasix.

Nobody has seen you at your best, just means people are gonna be even more impressed the next time they see you.

A little OT, but when your missus flips out at you, does she do it in English or Russian?
I'm sure you know she had your best interests at heart mate, I would buy her some flowers/shoes/new car and apologise.

Re: Rightyho

I have done this as well mate.

Just learn from it.

Personally I never use anything more than a little aldactone combined with Vit C now. IN 2005 British I used a thiazide and was so depleted I couldnt even walk properly. In 2004 British I used Lasix and looked awesome in the morning but as the day wore on I just flattened out

In 2007 I used aldactone and looked awesome although I did drop loads so needed to carb up more.

Lesson for me - harsh diuretics dont work.

Re: Rightyho

This sport is a learning curve so no need to be hard on yourself. Despite the best advice, even I have made mistakes when in show day mode. Your head simply is not in a rational place, it happens to the best of us. In time, you learn to ignore the urge to do something ill advised & stick to the basics. I've had the odd run in with lasix & seen
1st hand what it can do to a Bber. Nasty stuff. It's scary stuff too & can be very dangerous. Aldactone is far more predictable & is potassium sparing as well so it's less likely to flatten you out. Gotta be careful with the bananas & potassium tabs though if using aldactone as if the levels get too high, it can cause a heart attack.

I have a cunning plan now based on how I've seen you respond to the carbs/sodium & diuretics etc so if you want to get up there & show everyone what you are really capable of, I'll get you ready for Birmingham. It'll be a good show with Wade, Clarkey & you all on stage in different classes. I'll mosey on down & support you all.

Great stuff Paul, it really does help alot when you have someone that can give you good advice and reassurance like yourself and you do it all off your own back.

Re: Rightyho

Hackskii - dunno if it was second or third mate. Didn't go back in the evening so it just got nullified.

Dan - a new car? Lol, she got a baked potato.

Actually in all seriousness, she kinda pulled the Iron Curtain down around 1pm yesterday and decided to go shopping. Funny how the trolley suddenly filled with Teflon pans, steamers and loads of other kitchen crap she's has her eye on for ages. Got to the checkout and had my credit card abused to the max.

Her swearing is a mutter using English words until the really derogatory bit comes, then she goes to Russian. What she fails to remember each time though is that I know every Russian swear word known to man so understand her completely. Lol, bless her.

Right..... back on track....ripped **** here we come.

Paul and Tom and Kezz - cheers guys.

Tony - is Cafe Nero open again yet? Their loo got decimated around 11am Saturday.

Nigel DVDman - Look into my eyes, Room 1408, Room 1408 (message from the bird, whatever it means....)

Clarkey - I'll be watching all the shows so will meet up mate.

Rack - bout time you came down here and showed me how ripped you've got bud.

Paul B - this new diet is weird. It has, like, food in it. Struggling to eat it all. Wicked. Wooohooooo.

Re: Rightyho

Righty,

Been glued to this but didn't want to post till you had some time to contemplate and decide what you were going to do.
I think the one thing that REALLY does stand out is the number of people on this board that are here to help and support you. This board has been a lifeline to me in darker times last year and I know Tom and Paul S have both found comfort in times of darkness.

As has been said we all make mistakes, some bigger than others but each one can have huge ramifications come show time.
In the past pre 2006 I tried pretty much everything in my prep except diuretics but still made some horrific mistakes. 14 shows on and I am still learning about how I respond and react to foods, meds, supps etc and how to keep my head in the final few days before a show.
Unless you have tremendous resolve and strength it is near impossible to think straight in the final hours before a show.
Last year was the first time I felt at ease and comfortable about my final few days and hours and all because i had someone there to spoon feed me and tell me when to eat, sleep, train, fart etc. Thinking is NOT good in the final few days. Being told what to do by someone who isn't competing (that you trust) is how you get thru and present the best package you can. Hell, even big Ronnie and Jay have guys that tell them exactly what to do and these guys are at the top of their game. You become almost a robot and that is exactly how you must be.

I remember in 2005 being on the British stage for the first time, I was sh1tting it for about 10 days before. I tried upping the gear, dropping the food, carbing up using Smash (yes you did hear right), over used vit C so I had the runs after being so constipated I got the worst piles a person could have got. Oh yeah baby I have had it all go wrong.

Now I am calm. I have someone I trust and someone that backs up every idea with fact and science and not just because 'I say so'. It makes you feel comfortable, confident and most of all relaxed at a time when most of your competition are in disarray.

I remember early this year Paul said 'we are gonna get you dieting on carbs this time round'. I honestly thought he was taking the p1ss. Little did I know I would be eating 50-100g more than I do in the off season.

Its served its purpose phenominally well. I sit here today 5kg heavier than last year in Greece in better condition. Now if someone had said that to me 6 months ago I would have laughed my man boobs off. But its reality.

Go for the Birmingham qualifier and do EXACTLY as Paul says. Do not deviate but DO question as I always do, it makes you feel settled knowing there is a scientific and logical reason for doing it. There is always a reason behind his thinking but it will never involve any last minute fixes cos they really dont exist (well perhaps very very rarely they do....Remember Leeds last year Paul?!)

You are a big man at around the same weight as Tom and myself. Your body needs food, it needs carbs. Firstly to create a fat burning furnace but also to keep you sane and your mind working at 100%. This for a start will make the next show a breeze compared to the last.

I was talking to John H 2 days ago about prep and about keeping it simple. People honestly think there is something magical that he does to get in the kind of condition he gets in. Its all about getting back to basics and that's what Paul will do. Its what the BBers of yesteryear did and it will be something that I will always do from now on. It may be boring but I eat the same EVERY single day. I know to the nearest cal what I am taking in. It means I dont have to think, I just do. Yes towards the end the macros may change but to me its just the cardio that changes. The trick is bearing with it and finding out the amount of food that will keep your weight constant without cardio. Neither losing fat nor gaining fat but staying in homeostasis. Then its all about the cardio...What could honestly be more simple?

The trouble is now is that we have SO much more information than guys did even 10 years ago and this can be really dangerous. Yes knowledge is power but it can also be the one thing that can bring you down big time.

Anyway enough of my ramblings but best of luck in whatever you decide to do over the next few weeks and if you are competing in either qualifier, I'll be there supporting.

J

Re: Rightyho

James,

That is one heck of a post and deeply appreciated mate. You're totally right in everything you say, especially with regard to balancing out in terms of calories v expenditure, then tipping the scales with cardio or small carb changes.

Comparing my last diet to one constructed tightly around Paul's recommendations - well, they're poles apart.

I can see I made the classic mistake of running carbs down into the ground until there was nowhere left to turn - once all the carbs are out, you're running on empty and the fat loss stops, how can you increase your cardio without going catabolic or collapsing? You can't.

Having 30g of carbs from oats every couple of hours and some potato too is, well, unbelievably nice. My mood is elevated and the g/f assumed I was off the diet as a consequence of a rise in energy levels and general outlook on things.

I've had an hour long chat with her this lunchtime and she is now fully behind the idea of squeezing into the last qualifier. The only rule - I have to stay lively and not lethargic and sleepy like I had been for weeks.

Can't say I've been grumpy on my last diet, more apathetic about things.

Having Paul's input - do this because... INSERT FACT, do that because.... INSERT FACT is, indeed, like lifting the biggest weight of all off my shoulders.

And because I absolutely will follow, to the gram, what I've been instructed to eat, there will be no cheat snacks (believe me, owning a gym laden with protein bars and carb bars was a real test of strength when doing week after week in ketosis).

We've basically dialled in 250g carbs, 300g protein and about 40g fats a day, with plenty of early morning cardio. Paul will be having a look at me via photos at the end of this week, at which point the cardio may be increased.

The plan now is to chip the last bit off, dry out as I go and not have to try anything drastic as show day approaches. As Paul has discovered, the decarb/recarb sequence with a big water flush is too harsh for me and though he hasn't outlined his plans for the final week for me, I suspect there won't be much carb or water manipulation going on, which suits me fine.

Time for Pro-GF Nox now before training.
