Shoulder grinding

Hi there,

I'm glad I found this forum, I'm hoping I may be able to get the advice here about a problem thats starting to get a little worrying. I've been working out on a regular basis for the last year, and just recently over the last couple of months, I've started to notice a clicking and grinding in my right shoulder, especially when doing bench/chest press motion. At first I ignored it, but after working out yesterday, for the first time it's aching this morning (and not the right kind of ache!) The grinding is getting really quite bad too.

When I look in the mirror, I actually notice that my right shoulder is in a more forward position that the left, would this have something to do with it? And how has this happened? I love working out and the thought of having to stop really bothers me, but obviously I need to find out whats happening before it gets worse. Should I go to my doctor?

I've recently started taking glucosamine on someone at my gyms advice, that was a week ago, no effects yet...

I'm actually happy with the size i'm at now and would probably not mind so much if i can change my routine to cut in more and not grow... Perhaps this might be better for my shoulder.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Nick

Re: Shoulder grinding

I suspect you have a muscle imbalance. Are you over training/placing more empathis on a certain bodpart?

Book an appointment with a physio to check your posture.

Re: Shoulder grinding

Thanks for the reply, I have had trouble with my right side being weaker than my left (i'm left handed) but that was more apparent with my chest.. I've been sticking to dumbells for a while now to try and correct and my right is catching up woth my left. Think this is the cause?

Re: Shoulder grinding

Its not uncommon to have a stronger side and this can cause obvious problems.Dumb bells will help rectify this.

Advice remains the same - see a physio, before any long term damage is caused.

Quick question - are you performing rowing/rear delt exercises?

Re: Shoulder grinding

Yep, mainly bent over rows, and bent over lateral raises... During my back workout which I do once a week. Think I should do more?

Thats fine - i was enquiring as to wether you were neglecting them by concentrating predominantly on your pressing moves - obviously not

I think you know the answer to that!

Get the consultation done first and in the meantime concentrate on your legs if you want to train

Re: Shoulder grinding

OK, sorry, let me be a little bit clearer... Do you think it's ok to keep training with lighter weights that don't impinge on the problem, i.e. The shoulder is absolutely fine with stuff like tricep dips and shoulder press, the grinding only occurs with a bench press motion? Or stay off it all together? I've kinda had conflicting advice on this.

By the way, I went to the doc's who agrees that I should se a physio, looking at a 4-5week wait tho... Might pay to go privately just for one consulation...:(

Re: Shoulder grinding

Personally i would pay to see a physio asap, find out what the problem is,and be guided by them.

At the moment, given you can perform certain exercises without discomfort, the problem does not sound too serious, however, that may change if you continue to train.Your choice.
