![]() ![]() | hard to explain shoulder weakness - please read I have discovered a form of cable over head shoulder press that really exagerates a shoulder weakness I have. Just for your info... I have previously had a SLAP repair. Now about this cable press (I only found this was a weakness by accident): The starting position: Grab the handle (as you normally would a DB) like I was going to do a single arm OH shoulder press. Now I am strong pressing with my back to the cable machine so I am pressing with the wire behind me in a shoulder press movement. BUT!!!! I am exceptionally weak pressing facing the cable machine with the wire in front of me. The other arm (my right side) is fine, both ways. I only have about 90% external rotation range of motion back... maybe due to this weakness? What can I do for myself? Should I carry on trying to strengthen it with this cable press or something else? |

This could be a result of the surgery to the shoulder, or a myriad of other potential factors. I'm not quite sure how much the damage to the labrum would affect, if at all, the function of the lateral rotators post surgery. Fingers crossed it may just need some carefully prescribed rehab exercises & some very careful developmental stretching to correct it. I wish I could offer more help on this for you John, but I rather think it's a little out of my league.

I had a similar problem, if I'm picturing the exercise you describe correctly. I did a lot of work with resistance bands and while I'm not 100% sorted I can now do front raises and incline bench with no discomfort.

![]() ![]() | Re: hard to explain shoulder weakness - please read I went to a physio after the op. I saw x2 physio's. One was a main stream physio, the other was a sports type I think. The was recommended by Mr Funk who is one of the best shoulder surgeons in the country (he did my op). None of them made any differance. Rest, rotator cuff stuff and band work and all that was done. None made much if any differance that was significant enough to feel. Seeing these guys was private. Now a days I would have to go via the NHS. Pesonally, I think I still need specific rehab, strength work as this was never really done. I might see my Dr again and ask what can be done but I don't think he will say anything because I have normal everyday function back. It's just fcuking up my weights. Bench is not right, chin and lat pull downs and shoulder press are all affected. So obviously I can still lift, just not the same as it could/should be. |

I know a few exercises that may be worth trying, but the gyms I use have not got the equipment to do it with, but we will have. Anyway, you may well be getting some rehab helping us lug stuff about! ![]()

![]() ![]() | Re: hard to explain shoulder weakness - please read No probs nineP. The post about this was just a hit and hope really as I've only just found that movement and I'm just getting back into training again so I have a bit of a chance to re-program how I lift. One of the things the sports physio noticed was the left side shoulder blade starts rotating early and then only partially goes through the full ROM when lifting my arm up. TBH it's all a bit too much for me to remember as there seems to be that many things that they all said were the problems LOL All I really want to be able to do is push vertically and pull vertically. It is a bit complicated as my left trap wants to get invoved with bench press and I'm sure that the trap only thought that it was it's job to help with stability when the SLAP went un-noticed. I think I might be making sound worse than it is, it's not that bad - I am sure could carry on as I am - I just don't want to as I want it to be right. I could be being a bit fussy expecting it to be 100% after an injury though. Any other replys welcome... if any of you have had any probs and got over them I would love to hear about how they were sorted. |
