![]() | Stich??? My g/f has just started coming running with me in the mornings, problem is she gets a really bad stich after just a few mins. We slow down to a walk, it gradually goes, then when we start again it just comes back. Thought it might be because she just wasn't used to it, but this has happened three mornings now. Just wondered if anyone could tell me what causes a stich and is there anything she could do to reduce it? |

Often a breathing problem too, people not used to running take small rapid breaths, get her to slow her breathing but take longer larger breaths preferably in a set rythm with her foot strikes, so breath in for three foot strikes of the left foot, breath out for three foot strikes of the left foot. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | i tried that method but forgot to breath on the 3 left steps and fainted, seriously though its abit of all the previous, i used to do a lot of running and the main things are strech well, try to breath properly, dont go for a run untill at least 1 hour after food, and dont do too much too soon, but give her more time to get used to the running then the stitche's will disapear altogether.unless you belive the saying that-- pain is weakness leaving the body! |

![]() | Re: Stich??? Thanks guys, we're going again on Friday, so will try it then. As for the food, we run in the morning before breakfast, so that should be ok. I think you're right about her breathing, so we'll work on that too. Cheers. |

| Gym Addict | Re: Stich??? I did a lot of running to shed a lot of body fat, usually half hour or more runs on the treadmill, at first I started to get stiches after a couple of minutes and had to stop. However I was determined to keep going, so each time I would go in I'd aim for 5 minutes then say 7 minutes then kept going up and eventually I eradicated the problem of a stitch. Imo it's all to do with the body really, if it's not used to that type of exercise motion then problems occur but if you get used to it there shouldn't be a problem. Another thing I found was drinking water, I found that if I went on a treadmill and didn't drink water within the 30 minutes, sure I'd get thirsty but I would not be interupting breathing patterns, thats another issue is the breathing, tell her to breath through her nose and exhale through her mouth, variety of ways you can do it and theres pleanty of articles on the net with different examples: http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/news/article.asp?UAN=24 And thats also another thing to add to my first point, getting used to it. If your girlfriend has not really been a runner or someone who is quite fit on the exercise point of view then it does take a while to get into it, but she will get there . |
