I try and eat every 2 hours and my last meal is at 6:00.

Are you trying to lose or gain weight?

Ok then.
I would eat some carbs and fats with each meal.
But I would use lower GI carbs and the last meal should be a protein and fat only like eggs or something similar.

I find the lower carb diets easier to follow only because they tend to leave me with more stable even blood sugar levels. I tend to not overfeed if I keep the carbs lower.
Vegetables would be my number one choice for diet, then the lower GI fruits like berries and apples.
Adding apple pectin to each meal will slow down the glycemic load, add soluable fiber to your diet and let that meal exit the stomach a bit slower.
Add good reasons to add this to your diet and it will lower your cholesterol too.

Just a few tidbits about fiber. 35 grams of fiber burn 250 calories.
Just eating something like celery will actually have negative calories due to the amount of fiber compared to the energy you get from the celery.
See how just little modifications in diet can add up?

1 gallon of ice water burns 150 calories.
So 1 gallon of water and 35 grams of fiber will equal 400 cals extra burned in a day. Just 20 minutes of cardio or just over 1 piece of bread and you got 500 cals a day reduction and at the end of the week 1 lb fat loss.

You will lose some muscle unless you keep something like GH or gear in the mix.

Smaller, more frequent meals work well.

Re: how many meals

3 hours is cool, generally speaking 5 hours would be the max you could go without eating as blood sugars would end up being pretty low.

Hi Scott,

I'm not sure if you're still doing this, but were you trying to lose weight or gain at the time?

I was just wondering because if the body does a lot of repair / growth overnight, isn't it a good thing to give yourself a bit more food a couple of hours before bed time to ensure you're not going to go catabolic?

I dont think the body is that catabolic at night, just because insulin is low and GH is high along with night time spikes of test, Id bet it is minimal.
I honestly think more fat is burned for fuel more than anything else.
Remember in a resting state the body burns primarily fat for fuel.
When you walk slowly, the body burnds fats.
When sprinting or weight lifting the body burns glycose or glycogen.
As with all weight loss that is done natural, some will lose more muscle than others. Generally speaking the fatter guys burn more fat than the leaner counterparts.

I dont believe in eating before bed, I also dont believe in eating in the middle of the night.
Digestion takes a good supply of blood, this blood could be better spent on recovery IMO.

Kids that sleep longer than others tend to be leaner.

Seriously I would not worry about going catabolic during sleep, I would worry about going catabolic taking too long between meals.

Re: how many meals

Okay, good points, but...

I'm not thinking in terms of weight loss at night, if you're getting to the stage where you're burning fat surely you're not going to be in a position to build?

I'm interested that the body burns fat at rest though, I didn't know that - maybe this answers the above point

Also, to be in a good position to repair and grow, the body needs a source of fuel, energy & protein, right? What happens if the body uses up all of its potential fuel for recovery in the first few hours of sleep?

I'm not trying to argue with you Scott, this is something I've been wondering about for a while, you know, the right balance at what is really a very important period for R&R.

Re: how many meals

Well, the body burns fat for fuel in the repair process.
Fat is the most efficient source of fuel actually.
Barry Sears wrote a book called Enter The Zone and he mentioned very small amounts of macro-nutrients before bed in a certain ratio 40/30/30 and found that you could literally wake up leaner than when you went to bed.
I did this, but it is only like 100 calories.

It is not like the body needs thousands of calories during a resting fast.
A resting fast is where the body uses the least fuel of anytime.
I find it hard to believe that any significant amount of muscle is lost during sleep.
Again, GH production is highest at night in the first few hours of sleep, that is mildly anti-catabolic in itself as well as being mild Lipolysis.
When you wake in the morning test production is also at its highest, which in itself is anti-catabolic.

I dont understand why the body would burn protein (the most inefficient fuel source), to repair the very muscle it is trying to repair?
If fat is the most preferred fuel source in sleep why would it slip into the most inefficient fuel source for recovery?
Resistance training tears the muscle down, the body's adaptive responce is to make the muscle stronger.
Id bet that less muscle is lost at night with resistance training than not.

Re: how many meals

Thanks for taking the time to reply!

I think the use of the word catabolic was a bit stupid of me, I don't believe you're going to go catabolic, but I'm still not completely convinced the body could be in an anabolic state throughout the night if I don't eat for 12 hours (say 6pm->6am or 8pm -> 8am).

I might look into that Barry Sears thing, sounds interesting
