![]() | Cheers guys. I wish I could say I had lost weight but although bits of me have toned up underneath, I am definately needing to lose some of the love handles I gained just before xmas cos Im heavier than ever right now. I'm starting on PSCarb's diet now so hopefully this will make a big difference. I am thinking about entering a competition in the physique class around jun or july so plenty of time to trim down. But does anyone have any comments re whether I have the right general physical attributes for physique (ie; is there enough muscle on me or enough time to put muscle there) or should I lconsider doing fitness instead. (I'm not particularly flexible or gymnastic though!) All your thoughts greatly appreciated. :smoke: Last edited by southcoastgirl; 31-01-2006 at 06:46 PM. |

I would concentrate on the diet and you wont go far wrong with Pauls advice . The key to diet is making it a part of your everyday lifestyle, then it doesnt become a chore, its the losing and then gaining cycle that you need to break and that is the only way of doing it. I would set yourself a realistic target. If im honest I dont think your gona be ready for a show my July.. In fact I would advise against in as im not a fan of losing weight quickly. I would say you can prety much transform a body in a year and that should be your goal setting yourself smaller goals along the way to keep yourself motivated. Oh and when u reach a goal reward yourself with something ![]()

You are right too about setting achievable goals, but I am a person that needs the really impossible goal to shoot for. My first goal though is to get to a low bodyfat where all the hard training I have done over the last year actually shows. Then I can decide if I should compete. If I dont look the part though, I wont enter.:lift: Since I live on my own and don't have a training partner as such, its sometimes really hard to keep going, especially when you are struggling with some niggly injuries like I am at the moment, so the best motiva tion for me is talking to you guys on the forums and getting your advice and help, which I really appreciate. It would be so easy to just give up completely right now. Guys...dont let me do that PLEEEESE! :grouphug: | |

You do have a solid base judging by your strong looking legs.. I would do some resistance training for muscle devleopment. This by it self gives a much bigger requirement for fuel than fat which fat is zero. Fat is used for fuel and muscle requires fuel. Being a bit overweight I myself would drop the carbs. Most overweight people get insulin resistant. This is kindof a bummer (American word for saddening ), because this requires more insulin to do the job of what less insulin is supposed to do.Dont feel bad about 1/3 of the people are insulin resistant. To switch this you need to exercise, actually add some EFA's in your diet, (fish oils will work nicely here), trim back the carbohydrates. This will switch the body from burning carbohydrates (glucose/sugar) to burning fat (ketones and FFA's or Free Fatty Acids). Does work, I am dieting right now doing something similar and did lose 9 lbs in 20 days. Some people do not like the lower carb diets but for those 1/3 the people having problems with insulin resistance this is the best course of action. A person being insulin resistant can actually not loose weight on high carbohydrate low fat diets, for some they even actually gain weight being calorie deficient. This is not only bad but actually slows down the metabolism and when you go back to eating again you will even get fatter. This happens due to the bodies responce to carbohydrates and blood sugar. When blood sugar spikes from eating carbohydrates, insulin rises to lower blood sugar, insulin is a transport hormone and is considered a storage hormone. Hey that is good for shuttling glucose into the muscle storing it as glycogen for later use but if insulin it too high it will store as fat. Now that blood sugars are low (hypoglycemia) the brain (the number one hog in the body for glucose/sugar), calls out for more fuel and you end up eating more carbs and this vicious circle happens all over again. So keeping insulin in check is mandatory for losing fat and trying to get out of being insulin resistant (later on you can get to be type 2 diabetic). How is insulin kept in check? Fat is the number one food for supressing insulin. Ironicly fat does not store as fat, carbohydrates store as fat. Eating fat with your meal will slow down absorption of the meal and this meal will take longer to digest and give you lower more stable blood sugars. Not only that but fat satisfies hunger better than any other food. What happens with this? More energy, and allow the body to use fat for fuel. Hey if you are trying to lose fat and you have fat stores this makes very good sense. Fiber also slows down the spiking of insulin too. It is recomended that 35 grams of fiber a day should be in the diet. Beings that this helps elimination, keeping insulin low, can lower cholesterol, all good stuff not to mention 35 grams of fiber burn 250 extra calories. Man, this is good news. Cut back on the carbs, up the fiber, up the fat (take those fish oils, this helps to rev up your brown fat burning machine), eat 3 meals and 2 snacks, up the water and you are right there. Course this is not a diet but just how the body responds to food. I bet you are very similar to me and I want to lose 25 lbs and have just 16 to go.
