Atkins diet ?

Am I currently on the Atkins diet, but I would like to come off it. I am currently 6 days on 1 day off. Is there way to come off this diet without placing the weight back on?

Thank you for your help!

Work out how many calories your eating on the atkins plan and base your new diet around that calorie consumption level, problem is you'll feel like your starving, the atkins fills you up good an proper

Well, actually the Atkins diet is not bad.
Problem is keeping insulin on check if you want to lose weight.

With the Atkins using high fat and high protein and low carb, you will keep insulin in check.
The body has no choice to do so.

carbohydrates drive up blood sugar.
Insulin raises to control blood sugar.
Insulin is a storage hormone and will store the carbohydrate as a fat.
Not to mention, in the presence of insulin the fat stores cant be used for energy.

So for dieting Atkins is ok.
Also with the high protein it will spare lean muscle mass.

Keeping insulin in check is vital for sucess while dieting.

Atkins is fine just because 6 guys went on the diet and 4 fell of it just proves they cannot handle it not that the diet is crap infact as long as you don't go overboard with the Sat fat foods then it is a very good base. i have used the base thoughts behind the atkins diet to design diet for women and it seems to work really well...

Atkins

After not loosing weight for ages and tried the 'Atkins diet' and was amazed..I was going away and wanted to shed as many lb's as possible
I started 5 weeks ago and was 16,9

I didn't buy a book just looked up what foods were ok and went for it.

I lost 8lb first week and 2lb every week after.

I had 4 to 5 meals a day and was very strict, also drank about 4 litres of water a day and took a multi vitamin capsule.

When I went on my hols (11th june)I WAS 15,9 and very pleased.

I did eat loads of crap while I was away as there wasnt much else and was very shocked to find I was 16,5 when I got back
:-( I admit I ate the wrong foods at the wrong time but that seems quite a hike and I was very active.Could this be water related?

Guess what ... straight back on the Atkins.

I have found I do get tired on occasion but other times I feel very alert.I'd say don't give up..You can eat other stuff (berries, nuts, etc) after induction so it becomes less boring.

Cheers Paul

Paul, yes this can be water.
I am going off of memory but 1 gram of fat will hold .5 gram of water.
1 gram of carbohydrate will hold 3.0 grams of water.
I have to look back to know for sure but comming from memory, this is what I remember.
Also salt can make you retain water too.

In ketosis the body burns fat pretty well.
But in the long run a ballanced diet is better for overall good health.

you have to remember what the base behind the atkins diet is...
it is to turn your body over from using carbs as energy to usinf fat as energy this way you burn more fat...etc..etc you notice a big drop in weight initially because of the water loss look at it this way...
for every 1g of carbs you take in that 1g takes 4g of water with it this is why you drop alot of weight in the first 7-10 days as you are avoiding carbs therfor your body will releast the water....
but you take in min to no water with fat this is why when you stop Atkins and you eat carbs again you rebound just as in your case Paul i am sure by enjoying yourself on your hols which you should be doing you ate loads of carbs in the form of either Booze or food hence the weight gain.....

so the best approach in my opinion is to formalate a eating plan not a diet as diet tends to give you the impression it is short term but you need to construct an eating plan with foods you like but are low in carbs and high in both protein and good carbs so you can stick to it long term....

this is the approach i took when designing an eating plan for my sister she has continued the eating plan for the last 15months and she has now lost 5st 7lbs so much weight she is haveing cosmetic surgery to get rid of the excess skin......

you can do it it isn't hard its all down to how much you want it.....

ooh well done paul on your weight loss before your hols....

Paul..

Thanks Paul,

I forgot to add that I ate 1 cheat meal(this was after induction) every week end washed down with 3 pints of beer. This seemed to have no effect as I was still loosing 2lb per week which if I read correctly is the safe limit without loosing all my muscle gains.
I tried a diet before 5/6 meals per day which was recommended on here but just did'nt seem to work for me.

My daily diet now consists of:

6.30am whey shake,4 rashers bacon and 2 eggs

10am couple of boiled eggs or tin of tuna

12pm tuna small bit of green salad

14.30 300g steak / chicken,a couple of rashers of bacon green salad and mushrooms.strawberries and cream

1730 workout followed by roughly same as 14.30 meal + creatine and
whey shake and 8 brasil nuts

I want to carry on loosing weight until I reach around 14.5 stone (my goal and the lightest I will have been since I was about 15 years old and I am 31 now,I was 20 .5 stone 2 years ago)and the best thing is that I can now see some of the gains I have made.I do realise that long term this diet isnt the best so I will tweek it where necessary with good carbs and go from there.occasionally I can't fit meal 2 in but apart from that and lots of water I am very strict with the above.

Overall I am very happy with what I have achieved since I started training and it's only when you come on a forum like this you realise that there is no quick fix.I train each body part once per week now as opposed to everyday when I started...Mind you I would love a quick fix to get rid of the man boobs,I can feel the pecs coming but just can't see e'm.

Many thanks Paul

you seem to be inteligent paul as you have set yourself goals and you realise that there is no quick fix..
i also congratulate you on the weight you have lost so far this is not an easy way to diet what i have found though with these diets is that although carbs are cut to a min the dieter does not take in enough protein and good fats...

i trust that you train if so you need to aim for 1-1.5g of protein per lb of bodyweight so you can hold onto the muscle you have.....i would also add some UDO's or olive oil to the tuna or you can get the tuna packed in olive oil....

Well, actually this is a typical problem.
The fact that you have tried other diets and failed tells me something.
Beings that you achieve on Atkins tells me that you have a problem with blood sugars spiking and Insulin.
This is very common.
Next time you eat a carb you will have to have a fiber and fat with it along with a protein.

After you get down to your target weight you will have to add some good carbs.
Look into the South Beach Diet
This is probably a bit more healthy than the Atkins.
But the Atkins will be ok to take the weight off but modifacation of the diet will have to be done later.

I do weights 3 days per week which is split by 2 days of fat burning low cardio.I am around 230lb at the moment and I am roughly eating that in g's protein inclusive of shakes.I have been able to sustain all of my lifts, lifting more on most of them so not to worried about loosing what i've gained.

I cook everything in olive oil but could do with some more good fat and maybe a bit more fibre as I don't pooh like I used too.

Many thanks
Paul

Water will help the poo thing too.
Fiber is good but can be a problem if you dont drink enough water.
Which by the way is good for losing fat.
