cutting carbs to start diet?

Im now eating 650g carbs on training days. Was thinking of cutting to around 450g per day to start my diet. I figured that this would give me enough carbs to keep chopping away at if my metabolism slows down.

I was talking to a guy last night in the gym who has guided a couple of boys into competition and he suggested that I start of by eatin no more than 300g per day. He said I shouldnt worry about my metabolism slowing down to much because of the training and cardio.

What do you guys think?
