Working Shifts and Cardio

Guys

I work a mixture of shifts, mornings 7am till 2pm (up at 05.30), Evenings 2pm till 9pm and nights 9pm till 7am.

I am aware that its best to do Cardio 1st thing when you get up but there is no way I can get up at 4.30 in the morning, so I try to do it when I work an Evening shift.

Does it matter that when I work a night shift and I rise at 4pm I get in my cardio in the afternoon?

Also with my diet, advice is not to eat to much overnight when at work but if I dont eat I am so hungry I cant sleep when I get home in the morning.

Anyone got any idea's of how I can best manage my cardio, work and diet whilst working shifts?

:lift:

Re: Working Shifts and Cardio

IMO 'you do cardio'!!! Thats the most inportant thing!!

I wouldnt argue that am pre brekky is the best time to do cardio, or after weights when glucogen levels are low also.

The most impotant thing is "you do cardio" , no matter what time of day! you do it! and thats what counts my friend.

Also! one hour extra sleep is not worth more than 'am cardio' IMO ONLY!!

Rest and sleep are the most neglected part of most peeps training (once again IMO)

Also! dont eat late at night and all that jazz is a myth! A calorie is a claorie! No matter what time you eat it, it WILL not influence weather you put weight on/maintain/lose weight.

Re: Working Shifts and Cardio

you'll get used to doing cardio that early mate, i go to bed a little earlier to make up for it. i also work shifts and start work at 6am. it takes me 30mins to drive to work, so when on pre-contest diet i am up at 4.15, a quick cup of black coffee and out to do my cradio for 4.30, back at 5am. then its breakfast, a shower an off to work. closer to the comp i'l throw another session in, late evening.

Wow Steve

I am impressed I thought I was dedicated getting up at 3pm this afternoon and going to the gym for an hour to get in a back session before 12 hour nights tonight but you deserve a medal.

Looks like I had better get another alarm clock and start getting up an hour earlier.

Keep up the good work and thanks for your advice guys.

Re: Working Shifts and Cardio

I'm also on shifts.. 7 till 7 permie nights. I'm lucky that my job is an active one, lots of step work and walking.... I also make it challenging some nights by wearing a 40lb weight vest.

Eating sort of fits in with the work break times but I just make my own breaks to eat when they don't. I try not to eat after 5am and some days I do feel hungry when I go to bed. I do have to take the kids to school and pick them up so my sleep time is pretty limited.

Slamdog

Seems your lucky I am sat on my ass all night doing very little with an occasional walk every couple of hours.

Just had a long think though about things tonight and I really need to up the Cardio to get where I want to be. So I have decided I have to really try and get 1 hour a day in everyday for the next 6 weeks no matter how tired or busy I am.

Shall let you know how things go.
