Question 65% of heart rate! i dont get it?

hey guys,
im loosing fat at the mo so have upped my cardio in the gym! now im not sure what is best to do.
when you do a fat buring programme on the tread mill it keeps my heart rate at 65% but for 30mins and keeps me at a steady walk and only burn about 200 calories.
now if i run at a faster speed for the same 30mins i can burn 400 calories but with a higher heart rate!
now which is better for burning fat cause the steady walk just dont feel like a work out if you know what i mean?

cheers guys

Re: 65% of heart rate! i dont get it?

Keep your heart rate at 65%. This way you will burn a larger % of fat to muscle. If you increase your heart rate you'll not only burn a larger amount of fat, but you'll also burn that hard earned muscle.

Re: 65% of heart rate! i dont get it?

as above to a certain degree.

any thing over 70% you will burn carbs rather than fat, and if you are carb depleted your body will break muscle down to use as energy.

i go on the cross trainer and keep my hr at 126 (65%) and i burn 650 cals in 1 hr

another option is to do interval training where you do short bursts of high intensity then back to low, ie jog for a while then sprint for 10secs.

Re: 65% of heart rate! i dont get it?

Firstly, it is impossible to tell how many calories you are burning. The readers on cross trainers etc don't take into a huge number of factors such as age bodyfat, metabolism.

The 'fat burn zone' target of 65% is also pretty generalised when it comes to different people, In my experience I get better fat-loss results from 40mins at 75-80% as opposed to 60-65% for the same length of time.
In my opinion everyone has their own 'fat burn zone' which is found through personal experience rather than a simplified formula.

HIIT as Andy said has a definite part to play in fat-loss.

Re: 65% of heart rate! i dont get it?

any type of cardio is going to help you loose weight in the long run, its down to you to find out how you are best suited to loosing body fat.

try maintaining diet and do 2 weeks high intensity and 2 weeks low and see what the results are.

dont make it too complicated mate, it'll put you off.

they say to burn fat you should be able to hold a conversation when doing your cardio but i can still hold a conversation at 150 bpm which some will say is pretty high intensity. eveyone is different mate, remember that.

Re: 65% of heart rate! i dont get it?

IMO I think all this BPM etc is very overlooked.

If your losing fat from cardio & diet then your obviously doing something right. I wouldn't advise anyone to go absolutely mental on a treadmill so they can't breathe - just enough to realise your working your heart.

It's common sense really. We all know if our body's being worked or over-worked. Please don't sit on a bike reading girly magazines though ffs!!! lmao you'll get naff all done.
