broke fib and tib

been in plaster for 3 weeks now another 5 to go before its of [cant wait]
my leg above knee as gone realy thin lack of use prob, but ive lost almost what ive gained through out the year im devastated is under statement.
my concern is the thought of doing squats, leg curls is very worrying the preasure on the fracture is will always be on my mind. as any one gone through a simular experience that can reassure me.
the op was a plate and 3 screws to hold together, it wasnt a straight snap it fractured at an angle and if i put weight on it now the doc said only the repair is holding your weight so no weight for 12 weeks.
thanks budgie

Re: broke fib and tib

Hi I broke my fib and tib quite badly playing rugby in 2006 I also had a spiral fracture down to the ankle. I had an external fixator on for about 4 months this is basically a frame around the leg, with wires going straight through the leg had nine wires in total, I then had to have a plaster on for 3 wks. Like you i lost a lot of size from from my leg, i would say that i put a lot back on as soon as i was able to use it again (before starting weight training) I broke it in april was off work for 6 months and never trained legs until the following january. Now i am fully recovered and dont even think about it when going heavy on legs I started off slowly with high reps then built up the weight as my strengh and confidence returned. Just try and stay positive and give your self plenty of time to recover and im sure you will be fine. All the best.

Re: broke fib and tib

First off you took the right step having it plated. I worked with a bloke who broke his and didn't want plate. Took many many months to heal without plate.

In answer to your question though he is now back ona motorcross bike and doesnt give it a thought as far as i know.

As the previous post states the muscle memory you will get will see it back to size in no time.

Cheers

Colin

That's it mate. Ok it looks like he's had cruciate reconstruction but shows you can bounce back from a big injury.

Keep working hard!

Re: broke fib and tib

thanks lads, its more of a confidence thing to me, the thought of doing deads or squats turns me thinking of the fracture. but as been said by all above you have gained my confidence and try to forget it.
1 more week of plaster then physio.
CANT WAIT

You really shouldn't worry. I was in cast for 23 weeks (GASP i know) and it's been about 20 weeks since, and im returning to normal, with an exceptional lack of exercise (terrible i know, but i've had family problems and exams!) so if you excercise regualy it'll be good!

I do suggest swimming once your cast is removed though, you will feel an instant difference
had cast of 2 days ago but still cant put any preasure on it, my first proper bath for 8 weeks, bliss it was, im just doing basic movments know bending and trying to twist my foot it only moves about an inch on its own,
thanks all for your encouragement. if any body could recomend any form of exercise to get my calf muscle working so i can get through this a bit quicker, unable to go swimming at the mo cos i have to rely on other people.

Re: broke fib and tib

For the calves when I had my legs broken I was told to loop a towell round my foot and slowly pull it up then back down, keep repeating
