![]() | Shin Splints I play football 3 times a week 90min games. Some weeks my legs are fine and other weeks my legs get really sore and swell up, i was wondering if there is any additional exercises i can do that may help with this problem. + only other exercise i do is > 5x5 60kg bench press and 50 squats with same weight 3 times a week. Football is on different days from this. My legs never used to bother me and i've been playing football since i was able to stand? |

![]() ![]() | Re: Shin Splints too be honest mate shin splints forced me to stop boxing, it got really bad! i spent loads of time researching and spent hundreds on physio's an support bandages. the only remedy that works is REST... and if your anything like me that hurts more than the injury. seriously though shins splints can get real bad if the muscle rips off the tibia. I iced mine with peas twice a day for two years whilst still boxing and it helped... but didnt cure |

![]() | Re: Shin Splints Isnt there something i can do, i dont really want to take time out from football as i really enjoy it. I've been taking Ibuprofen to help but its not really working, do you think that a stronger anti-imflammatory of the doc may help? |

![]() ![]() | Re: Shin Splints I've suffered with shin splints for a while now, I used to run competitively for years then whilst I was training for a duathlon in 2006 I started getting incredible pains in my shins. I trained through it for about a week but had to give up because the pain was just too bad and have never been able to run or jog for any great deal of time since then. You can gradually re-introduce training after a while but if you continue to train through it, believe me it will get worse. My doctor offered me local injections of ibuprofen to stop the pain but to be honest the best thing you can do is rest it. There are some strengthening exercises you can do for your shins. Sit on the edge of a bench and hold the edge of a weight plate on you toes, raise the plate up using the strength in your shins (dorsiflexion) and relax down. Repeat for 3 sets of 8-12 reps. Hope this helps mate, know how you feel! |

I'd advise you to go & see a podiatrist - you'll be surprised, but shin splints can be caused by posture problems, i.e. the way you walk/run. Rest does help, but squatting will not help things. I decided what I wanted to do. Make a decision between football & training, but go to your doc & get referred to a podiatrist through the NHS - that's my advice.
