Knee pain caused by running

Hi, having not ran for about 18months due to illness i decided now was the time. I think i may have thrown myself into it a bit quick tho. After my third 3 miler of the week i awoke the next morning with sever sweeling and bruising and swelling all over the knee joint. After this had subsided the pain was concentrated on the inside of the kneee about an inch off-center both knees. Been to the docs and got the take it easy usual advice. Has anybody else had this, is this common or am i destined to be a crippled forest gump wanna be if ever try that again? Any exercises for knee strength? Cheers

Re: Knee pain caused by running

sounds like you have done too much too soon mate, take it easy...... i should imagine any leg work will strengthen your knees, but saying that both of mine are pretty shot!!

tbh mate the usual advice is the best advice imo, i've done both my knees in before with similar symptoms as you and I was told the same thing, just do as little exercise as poss with my legs. I know it can be hard depending on your job, but the more you work them with an injury the worse it will get.

Re: Knee pain caused by running

Typical advice from doctor: "take it easy", ...don't go over doing it", "....make yourself a nice cup of tea and have a sit down"..... wtf ? Not "right we've got a guy here who is taking an interest his health. Let's do what we can to get to the bottom of the problem and get him back on his way to good health."

You may well have gone over board in that first week, given you've been off (you said off with illness??) for a year or so. I think your best bet is to get in touch with a good Sports Physio who would be better qualified to diagnose what is causing the problem (maybe tight ligaments / tendons due to under use, muscle imbalance or problem with cartilage, etc, etc).

I think a good way of finding a good one is to get in touch with your local Rugby Club. See if they can recommend anyone, otherwise your left with the hit and miss of the Yellow Pages (ie suck it and see). Ive got a good Sports Physio that I see every 1-2 weeks for general maintenance work so if Ive got an injury in "the post" I can get her to concentrate on the area in question (in your case your knee joints supporting muscles). I get problems with my left knee purely from over use (ie heavy squatting and lots of indoor rowing) but I find the Physio work including stretching and 'deep' tissue massage really does help keep things ticking over.

If you can't get to a Sports Injury Specialist you might try some self Rehab? If there's inflammation you could maybe try some ice packs on the area to reduce swelling and once the pain has subsided (after a week or two) try some brisk walking on a treadmill to warm up followed by lots stretching to help loosen up the muscles and free the fibres (assuming that theres muscular trauma ??). I personally think stretching should be the most important element especially as you say you just started up again after a year off.

TBH though if your going to self treat I would do some proper reading up on this as I myself am not a qualified sports physio therapist. Im sure Amazon will have something?

Good Luck.

Re: Knee pain caused by running

Thanks u lot. Prob was a bit over enthusiastic. Coming back from thyroid (hyper) trouble and so my weight has been fluctuating a lot due to metabolism settling with my medication. I figure in the long term i should as troy says take it a bit easier and concentrate on my stretching. Can anyone recommend a good book/site on the subject of stretchiong for injury prevention? Thanks again

Re: Knee pain caused by running

If you go se a physio they'll check you out and give you exercises to strengthen your knees if you need them, if theres nothing wrong with them one visit should do and you can keep up the exercises yourself.
