Leg Press

Every time I go heavy with leg press I get this sharp stabbing pain at the very bottom of my back on the left hand side. It is at the boney bit at the top of my glute.

As I continue the leg press it feels like a burning sort of pain and is bloody uncomfortable to say the least. It's not painfull enough to make me stop but I guess most people who don't work out would probably stop.

Anyway, I've had this for probably 3 years now and I even stopped doing leg press for nearly 12 months. As soon as I started again with leg press it comes back.

Anyone heard of or experienced anything similar ?

I've booked an appointment at the quack's this time so I'll see what he's got to say.

I guess not doing leg press at all is an option but I'd rather get it sorted if I can. I cannot feel it at all doing squats or any other leg work.

Re: Leg Press

Probably a posture issue, get someone to check it over, try tensing your abs / obliques / lower back and go lighter for a while.

Do squats rather than leg press. Simple.

Re: Leg Press

yea cause squats are better...not...

look at how far you are bringing the weight down on the press if you bring it down to far your lower back will lift from the pad this can cause the pain you are experiencing..

Sounds like where the origin of the piriformis sits. You may be stretching the sciatic nerve a bit too much. Just reduce your ROM to the point where you bring the weight down to just beyond 90 degrees at the knee. Bringing the knees to the chest offers no more stimulation on the quads, it just compromises the back, as when going this far down there is usually quite a pronounced pelvic tilt that has to be brought back into line before the quads kick in. This is where the danger to the back lies.

Not the Squats v Leg Press again...

If he doesn't get the pain on Squats then why not have him do Squats?

He is able to Squat so he might as well take advantage of them

Re: Leg Press

I would like to keep leg press in my routine if possible, hence my question.

Cheers for the advice guys. I'll give it a go and let you know how I get on
(my next leg session is Tuesday)

I've also got an appointment with the quack this afternoon. Probably a waste of time but I'll let you know what he says also.

Thanks again.

Paul - what about for natural trainee's who are able to squat (obviously your previous back injuries preclude you from squatting) - squatting (and also I beleive deadlifting) has been shown to increase Bioavailable Test and massively increase natty GH production...

While for an experienced BB'er such as yourself who already has large thighs enhancing definition is the key, the rest of us are just trying to pack on some mass.

Or have I read it wrong and are you saying you rate leg press as a better mass builder than Squats?

(Off Topic: Did you sort your TV?)

That sounds like a complete load of bollox to me, why would just those two movements increase test over any other heavy movement??

Re: Leg Press

Just wanted to add that for me I feel that the leg press helps build the inner part of my quad just above the knee.
