Straight Leg Deadlifts

Worth doing these on Hamstrings day or not?

I trained Hamstrings yesterday and i did these. I feel that it puts a lot of strain on the back and hardly any on Hamstrings. Is it worth doing?

Re: Straight Leg Deadlifts

Legs need to be bent slightly! They should be called Slightly Bent Legge Deadlifts!

That's actually VERY wrong and the reason why many people have back pain from this exercise.

SLDL are one of the best mass builders for the hams... but also probably the most incorrectly done exercise.

Slight bend in legs, and push glutes and hips BACKWARDS, DON'T go downwards. If you are doing them correctly, the bar (or dumbells) won't go much lower than mid-thigh... certainly not below knee level, even if you're a monkey.

You should feel no pressure whatsoever on your lower back doing it this way.

I love em, best exercise for hams IMO, you can't not do them for good development, JMO.

As big said, wrong...

Try with a barbell for starters, keep your knee's slightly bent, completely straight and you risk pulling either semi membrinosus or semi tendinosus tendons....as you lower, push your ass out and back, thats the trick of it where people go round.

At the bottom of the movement, contract the hams/glutes for a second then power back up.

You pretty much just do hold the dumbbells. By pushing your ass and hips back, naturally the dumbbells will go downwards... but nowhere near as much as they do if you're lowering from the waist. And you won't get any unnecessary pressure on your lower back.

If you know anything, you'd know their far from a 'ballistic' stretch...i think you need to read up on ballistic stretching. Either that or your hugely confused as theres nothing ballistic about them.

Secondly, in the BBing world they are a re-knowned exercise for the hams, and many people - including myself - use them with great results.

Thirdly, one of the PT's i work with has a masters etc in exercise physiology & anatomy and swears by this exercise as bread and butter for hams.

What experience/qualifications do you have to offer your opinion on it? By the sounds of it, very little if you think its a 'ballistic' stretch.
