twisted knee!!

i twisted my knee on tuesday night for the 6th time in 2 years. i did it work when i slipped in some blood n some water (i work in a meat factory by the way), when i put my wieght on my right kne to try n stay up i landed funny (where one half of my joint went out of place and popped back in again streight away).
to say i have weak knees is a little bit of an understatement because since year 9 in high school (im 19) i have twisted my left knee 5 times and then my right 6 times.
im not sure what is/was wrong with my left knee but i know that the 1st time i twisted my right a little fragment of cartlidge chipped of and remained behind my kneecap and i am,as far as i know, on the waiting list for keyhole surgery to wash the chip of cartlidge out.

well thats my plight..anyone got similar joint problems? please do share.

cheers,
john:-p

Re: twisted knee!!

I tore my anterior cruciate ligament a few years ago. Had 2 lots of surgery. First was to removed the cartilage that I sliced - which was keyhole. Then I had a hamstring graft to repair my ACL. I was lucky - I tore my acl playing football in Belgium - so was treated there. The health care over there is 2nd to none.

I had keyhole within 72 hours and an ACL reconstruction 3 weeks later. Combined with intensive physio by one of the guys who looks after the FC Brussels football team.

Sounds to me like you may have a weak/stretched ligament.

hmm..maybe..
on my left knee i have recently been gettin occasional pains round the back of my knee (i last twisted my left knee over 3/4 years ago),and i understand that if it hurts round the back its tendon/ligament damage..at the front its joint damage.

so hows your ACL n hamstring now fella..still get any problems?
how did you get surgery that quick..are you on Bupa or somethin? lol
cheers,
John:-p

Re: twisted knee!!

I'm all good now. Knee is very strong. Ham is pretty good. Although, the weakness did cause slight problems with my lower back.

In Belgium you need medical insurance. My E111 took care of 75% for it. My company paid the remainder. If you can afford it, go private. I wouldn't trust the NHS with an ingrowing toe nail.

Re: twisted knee!!

The physio is just as important as the surgery, if not more so. NHS will stick you in a class of 10 and not give you a tailored rehab program. You need to be seeing someone one to one. I'd push for ultrasound also.

Re: twisted knee!!

Which plane of movement that you experience laxity (excessive movement in an unwanted plane) in the joint will help determine the type of problem you have. You say it's happened when twisting so it's possible this is a collateral ligament issue as opposed to a cruciate ligament. It's most likely to be the medial collateral that is either injured or has an inherent weakness. The cruciates offer some degree of rotational stability, but mainly restrict unwanted fore & aft movement at the joint of the tibia & femur. The loose body of cartilage floating round in the joint capsule is a separate issue, although it may well have been brought about by the fact that your knees are susceptible to this laxity.

I suspect, from what you have said, that this may be a condition you have either inherited, or you may well have damaged your knees as a child and it went undiagnosed. If you partially tear a ligament, it will be painful at the time of injury, but a complete tear will not be in a lot of cases. I'd get some exploratory surgery done as soon as you can.
