Twisted Ankle

I twisted my ankle last Saturday playing rugby, I would guess it is a grade II strain of the ankle ligaments as I could walk (albiet very gingerly) the next day. I iced it immediatley but it swelled up a lot and hasn't really come down since, there has been some very faint bruising on the outside of my shin and at the outside bottom of my foot.
I've been so busy with work I haven't had a chance to get it checked out but I'm visiting a physio this week.
the funny thing is all the swelling subsides when I go to bed and when I get up it is barely noticable, but after a few hours on my feet it returns. I have a compression sock on it which has helped a bit but the swelling is still there.
I can walk without any pain but if I stand on it for extended periods it does start to hurt.
It is stiff especially when I squat down but for the most part pain-free.

Any advice?

Re: Twisted Ankle

Only advice I'd have for such an injury R.I.C.E
Rest, Ice, Compress and Elevate - sounds like you are pretty much doing that. Other than that just keep it moving so it doesn't seize up.

Re: Twisted Ankle

When you say twisted, do you mean you rotated or over inverted the ankle (went over on it)?

The most typical injury to the ankle is inversion strains to the lateral ligament complex and treatments are similar. You need to regain mobility & strength. I would see what the physio says but in the meantime, keep icing the area (elevate where possible too) & take some anti inflams if you can tolerate them ok. The bruising indicates a strain of some sorts for sure.

Re: Twisted Ankle

Thanks for the advice guys, Ninepack it was an inversion injury. It's only been a week so I guess I'm being a little impatient but I will do as directed.

Cheers,

Jock

Re: Twisted Ankle

You could use the hot and cold water method to increase bloodflow and speed healing.

Put your foot in ho****er for a few minutes, when its nice and warm dunk it straight in a cold water bucket, when its cooled down swap back again, repeat.

I haven't tried it but was always told it was great for speeding along injuries, though not in the first 48hrs of course.

Re: Twisted Ankle

As a veteran in the injury department, (I've had lots of sports injuries over the years) please put heat on it and elevate it and for one week take 800 IU Vitamin E and 3000mg of Vitamin C above and beyond what you normally ingest.

Please wrap your ankle for a brace support effect with the compression sock.

Heat will sooth the pain and will allow for better circulation and drainage of edema.
Apply hot packs to your ankle while you sit.
Apply some Tiger Balm plaster

Stiffness can be from the swelling.
Don't put any extra weight on it other than your own body weight for at least a week.

While sitting, lift your foot off the ground and rotate the toes in a circular motion. Flex the foot upwards and downwards using the ankle.

How does that feel?

Re: Twisted Ankle

Physios are post injury once an established diagnosis has been made. E.D. and X-Ray. R.I.C.E is only good for upto 48 hours after that it is of no use. When giving advice please bear this in mind.

I advised the elevation & icing even this far after the acute phase due to the fact that he is still experiencing a lot of swelling & fluid pooling in the lower leg. Without wishing to alarm Jock, I was trying to get him to see a physio asap as there may be something more significant going on, hence the excessive swelling, for which ice is still of use. Normally however, this would not be of use if swelling & inflamation has subsided.

Don't panic Jock, they'll save your leg!

Re: Twisted Ankle

I did a similar thing a year or so back, totally ruined my tendons, black foot for weeks. Unfortunately you just have to rest and see a physio - all the best mate.
