ankle/shin/calf while running

Whenever I do CV lately I'm getting pain in my lower leg it seems to start in my ankles and work up my shin and calf a bit the more I go on.
I normally alternate between jogging and brisk walking and have found it's worse when I slow to the walk. It's like a burning sensation but not like I get when weight training, quite painful.

I have been doing a lot lately, most mornings.

Any ideas?

Re: ankle/shin/calf while running

Try changing your trainers, something with more padding. I use the cross trainer as my shin splints are too painful on treadmill

Re: ankle/shin/calf while running

Go & see a podiatrist - I did.

They made in-soles for my trainers & they have really helped to ease the pain. Don't get me wrong, they're not a miracle thing, but they do help.

You'll have an assessment where they will study your walk etc.

Re: ankle/shin/calf while running

Chris - That sounds useful, is that expensive though?

Ah24, cheers mate, I had just been searching for shin splints and saw someone else say changing trainers can help. They're not really proper running trainers I use so that probably doesn't help!
Also, I run on concrete as I train from home, so only CV is either running round the block or I go swimming one morning a week.
Am actually thinking about getting a bike and cycling instead, or just swimming more!

I went to see my local GP & they referred me to the hospital through the NHS.

Re: ankle/shin/calf while running

I changed my trainers to proper running trainers the difference is great i used to get the same pain, spend about £50 on a decent pair of runners you will notice the difference

Re: ankle/shin/calf while running

Hi there, getting proper runners is key to the first step of over comming this problem, however shin splints can occur from your running style. the pain you feel can either be a build up of pressure in a muscle caused by excercise or increases in excercise to a previously less frequently used muscle, tendon inflamation or damage to the bone itself.

most common advise you will receive from your gp is rest up for 7-14days...however if this shin splint pain is down to your actual running style this pain will occur again next time you start a course of excercise....I would then plump for the podiatrist who analyse the way your walk run and sprint and the asscoiated impact area...they should be able to knock you up an insole personally tailored to your need by taking an impression of your foot.

last friend of mine who had this done said the difference was noticeable and was very pleased, he was given a course of stretches for pre and post workout and strengthening excercises too total cost was about £159 private through Dave Macellans physio in Exeter, physio to Exeter Chiefs Rugby Club.

Re: ankle/shin/calf while running

Here is an exercise that will help you to strengthen the shins.

OK, stand on a step and put your back to the step.
Put just your heal on the step and do a reverse calf raise, drop your toes down that are off the step, then come back above parallel to the ground.
This will focus on the front part of the shin and strengthen.
Seems that the calf is overpowering the shin muscles.

Re: ankle/shin/calf while running

Shin splints are all about incorrect heal strike. Study how you run and change it. These are a not perminant and do not reqyire special trainers.

Re: ankle/shin/calf while running

I know you posted a long time ago, but, go see a podiatrist. Mr fixit is on crack or something, ive yet to meet someone with shin splints who has fixed it by adjusting their heel strike using their jedi mind tricks. Go see specialist, it costs but its worth it. You could go through the NHS but it will take months for u to get thro the bio-mechanics guys.

Re: ankle/shin/calf while running

Agreed - spend the money on going to see a podiatrist - i just did and it was worth it just to hear him explain what caused my injury - "shin splint" or inflammation of post tib tendon.
It was all down to how i'd been running on my left leg due to tightness in my glutes.
It's fcuked my training and really set me back cause i love running, but at least when the bitch heals it won't be coming back in a hurry...
£40 - 50 is well worth it imo..

Good Luck!

Re: ankle/shin/calf while running

Go to a running shop and have them help pick the shoes for you.

A good shop will have you walk in them and run in them before they let you buy them.
