![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Ruptured Achilles I have ruptured my achilles, and as I have been walking around on it for 4 weeks, I have made it worse! The thing that I find annoying is that I KNEW something was not right and I ignored it as I could move my foot around. I also saw a physio TWO DAYS after the injury and he didn't pick up on it. Needless to say, I am NOT going to be going back to that physio. I am going to have to have surgery now and then be in an equine plaster for 8 weeks. I may have gotten away with just the plaster if I had had it looked at immediately. As I will be on crutches and in a plaster, I don't think I will be able to be in the lab with health and safety. So lovely folks, any helpful hints on healing fast. I am going to be training upper body ASAP. Hmmmmmmmm wonder what muscle groups crutches build up? x x x T |

Well I needed to build up my delts and upper chest! Triceps, well.............................................. ............... At least it is the off season. I am going to stay on the diet cause I don't want to pull a Lee Priest again. 8 weeks in a plaster! Just think how hairy my legs are going to be. I don't think they will let me go to work in a plaster. AND I was trying to get signed back on a week ago! I got the injury when I was pulling this psycho guy off his GF (he was kicking the crap out of her in the street) and then he kicked me in the calf/achilles. NICE. It would have been more sensible if I had waited for the police, but they were taking SO LONG as they are always called to this house. Two silver linings have shown up already 1. Met another neighbour in the trauma clinic today 2. Psycho neighbour is going to be evicted by council now. I am having a bit of a dilemma about pursuing some type of compensation from the Physio department, cause I asked the physio to check my achilles. Would seem a bit odd to sue the same Trust I work for, however, I can't do on call, which is where I do make a decent wage. Just waiting for MORE silver linings to show up, cause I am sure there will be a few more. Whenever there is a major setback, something fantastic always happens x x x T | |

At least have him prosicuted for assault, get something on his record at least. Was it something like a grade III rupture? You are actually fortunate that he didnt square off in your face with his fist. Its a good thing I wasnt there, I have little patience for men that beat women. I would have slapped a good choke hold on him and put him out. At that point I might have stomped on his hands to imobilise him. Then probably just go on my merry way.

You had surgery sooner than my friend did, so I imagine you'll heal faster and be up and training those legs in no time! ![]() That Cissus powder looks amazing, Scott. I have a friend who had wrist surgery. She's really miffed because it is interferring with her training. I wonder if the Cissus would help her. Thanks for that link. I would take the psycho to court. He needs help. Let us know how it goes, Tat.

I think my dog has some hip problems so I will be giving her some of that. I will be taking it too.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Hi Tatyana, Glad I can do something for you here as you did me a great favour putting me on to Tom Venuto's BFFM book. As you may know I work in a fracture clinic, and treat a great deal of achilles ruptures, both partial and full. Generally treatment goes like this, Cast for six weeks in equinous, then bi weekly cast changes (in fibreglass) gradually bringing the foot up to plantigrade, possibly another six week, 12 weeks total. Getting surgery will bring the time down a little, 8 weeks possibly but it will depend on your healing rate. This is then followed by physio for a further 6 weeks. The Tendon is scarred and never quite as strong but strong none the less, full healing can take up to 8 months due to poor blood supply. The best treatment I have seen for TA rupture was a removable cast or Aircast boot with heel wedges. This enabled the patient to see a physio at her local GP weekly, gently increasing ROM and preventing muscle wastage (as well as a good leg shave). Not many consultants go for this though so you will have to insist on it specifically. The consultant who does this is at Maidstone (Kent) General btw. Remember its YOUR leg and YOUR treatment, you can ask specifically for what you want, even insist on it if the consultant is squeamish. They only cast you up cos they dont trust you not to walk on it, so gain there trust and tell them what a keen sportswomen you are, the protocol I outlined above does work! heals you quicker, and stops you getting ****ed off with casts and leg hair. Your scar will be very thin, but long, depending on whether you had a partial or full tear, I have patients who use a product called scar oil, from boots I think. It contains vitamins E etc, and essential oils to lubricate the scar tisue, plus the massage helps disperse it. Consultants are not sportsmen generally, they despise sports for all the work it sends them and they dont understand. Dont take any crap from them, be polite but firm and get what YOU want. If you do end up in a cast, you will need to do your homework on static contraction exercises and do lots of straight leg lifts and extensions to maintain muscle mass, which decreases significantly in 8 weeks, dont be too shocked most of your size loss will be water, retained by carbs in the muscles that were no longer needed as you were imobilised (all the nurses et will say its muscle though...bless). HTH if you need anything more please ask... SD

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Yes, I have already realised the consultant (bless his cotton bad bedside manner socks), is obviously so busy........................... Before the surgery, I did keep telling EVERYONE involved, right up until they put me under that it had to be FUNCTIONAL AND LOOK GOOD. The frightening thing is that if I had not been telling the first consultant in the DVT clinic that I was a bodybuilder, they would not have repaired it as it was 'functional' as I had been walking on it, albeit with a limp. Also, the consultant did NOT tell me I could get a fibreglass cast straight away, I suffered in the theatre plaster for about 5 days till I accidentally dumped it in the tub. I had it changed to fibreglass. I am mostly on crutches, and when I am 'walking' on them, I am swinging my injured leg back and forward, so the quad on my injured leg is working. I also sometime 'crutch it' with my injured leg held directly in front of me. It is my legs that seem to be more fatigued by the end of the day, not my upper body! I have Bio-oil, which I used on my implant scars, which has been quite amazing. Is this the stuff you mean? I have my first appointment on the 30th, so two weeks in a cast, I will ask for the airboot and wedges then, do you know the name of the ortho consultant so I can give it to my consultant? He did stress NO LOAD BEARING and I do think they do this as so many people are so unaware of how their body works and heals. AND people are used to being able to walk on leg casts. They don't get the difference between a broken bone and a ruptured tendon. I had been a bit freaked out as I have had a few people ram my foot into things when I have been in the wheelchair, and I have accidentally put my foot down and put a wee bit of weight on it. The consultant told me not to worry, AND I also have a friend that is a sports doctor who works with a few football teams who has been advising me. He did say it was better to keep training as the blood flow to this area is not good, and exercise will increase it. AND that the tendon always ruptures in more or less the same place because of this reduced blood flow. Thanks for the advice, I do heal very quickly, the last time I broke a bone, they said 6 weeks, but I was out of the cast in about 3! ![]() x x x T |

Bone heals faster than most connective tissues. Tat, you will be fine, you have a great working knowledge of the body. That and good diet will aid in all.
