Thumbs down Knee Cartilidge

Hey guys and girls,

Just wondering if any of you out there have had problems with your knees and more specifically cartilidge?

I had an operation to remove some cartilidge from my right knee in October last year and I'm still getting problems! Haven't had physio as the doctor advised to just exercise my quads and hams at the gym! Bloody NHS! lol

So anyway, I'm still getting pain and wondered if there's anything I should be doing?!

Hey, I'm just new to this, think it was possibly you who left a link on boots website?!
Anyway... my bro had a pretty big bit of cartilidge removed from his knee 2 years ago, and recovered really quickly. He had physio straight after the op tho. If I were you I would def head to the physio just to get it checked out, they'll be able to spot any problems and give you specific exercises to strengthen the are.

Hope that helps X

Hey taylzo, yeah I put a link there.. though some of the women might find some of the info useful!!!

The doc said to give it a couple of months and if no improvement then to go back and see him! Yay!

Thanks for your message!

I'd agree with u on that ^... best get it checked out by a physio... as by taking someone elses advice that doesnt know the real cause of the prob might end up making things worse.. hope u get it sorted as knee probs can leave u in a lot of pain when they want to! in the mean time.. wear a support if it helps.

Good luck.

Cool, glad you did, it is pretty useful! I haven't been doing much training after a string of bad luck starting with a car accident 3 years ago! Used to be really fit and toned but thats a distant memory now! Trying to get back into the gym and hockey now so will keep an eye on this site for inspiration!

Re: Knee Cartilidge

I had an ACL reconstruction a few years ago and a good proportion of my miniscus (sp?) removed.

Before the main sugery I had Keyhole clean out the knee after a nasty football challenge. I had physio directly after surgery. If you haven't had physio after surgery I'd be knocking your GP's door down. You really should be doing some form of rehab.

Sod your GP and go private - you'll only need a few sessions, but its very important to get it started.

You'll need to get the flexibility back and stregthen your quads to help support your knee. Fish oils and glucosamine sulphate are good supps to help.

Hi invisblekid!!
Yeah I had some of my meniscus removed too!!! After the op, I was given a sheet of specific exercises to do to get me walking and after that nothing!!!! Don't get me wrong, exercising my quads and hams seems to be strengthening the structures at the back of the knee, but it still feels pretty weak, and I've obviously been overcompensating for it cos now the other one hurts lots, particularly after running! But yeah, definitely gonna get some physio I think, don't wanna end up totally broken! And the fish oils & glucosamine do help, been taking them since nw yr!

p.s whats an ACL reconstruction??!

Re: Knee Cartilidge

It's a graft of your hamstring to make up a new anterior cruciate ligament. It's a typical football injury :(.

I was in Belgium at the time working for a very wealthy organisation so they paid for everything. Had a fantastic physio - ex professional footballer. I had a 30 min session 3 times per week w/ultrasound to break down any scar tissue which was forming. The NHS really is light years behind.

Re: Knee Cartilidge

I had the same op invisible kid! had to have my lateral ligaments repaired as well! all fun and games, had a piece of meniscus taken out as well.

Best exercise I got from the physio was using this little circle board with a ball in the bottom for balancing. Worked wonders for me!!
