What weight are you using? Do you use a belt? how far apart are your feet? Have you tried doing them seated on a smith machine?

How much are you trying to press? How tall are you? What do you weigh? How long have you been training?

What happens if you do the press seated?

Have you tried with a lifting belt?

I get this with standing military, but not clean and presses.
You are probably arching your back more than you think.
I would wear a belt with those.

I would do them seated with a barbell myself, unless you have good reason to do the standing version?

Re: when i do standing military press it feels like my back is about to give in

standing MP is really a light weight exercise

I only do about 25kg and I'm 98kg and with a fair amount of muscle

I would sack that weight off and go for seated DB press or smith machine

and use a belt for the sake of your back

Re: when i do standing military press it feels like my back is about to give in

Sounds like your lower back and maybe core are the weak links...

Reduce weight by 10-20kgs, then when lifting make sure your abs & glutes are held tight to stabilise you, you may even feel you need to tighten hamstrings and thighs a little..

The tightening of the muscles will aid in *grounding* you and give you a solid base to lift from...

Look at exercises to strengthen *core* and dump the belt IMO let your own bodies *inner belt* (core muscles) start to learn to take the strain..

Why would you? I find that a Smith just ruins my joints. If you do a standing press with a BB then carry on doing that. If it hurts your back, then sit down. A word of caution though. If you sit, you can actually put more pressure on your lower spine because this is where all the weight bares down on.

Always tense your core when lifting.

I'm up to 60kg for 8, slow and controlled - not too much, but enough to grow - I sometimes use a belt, but since doing a lot of direct core work (since a lower back injury ironically enough) I find I'm much more stable.

Nice post Cookie - I'd very much look at his advice.

Re: when i do standing military press it feels like my back is about to give in

Video your lift and watch it back. I bet it is predominantly a form issue.

It may also be a weakness in your lower back.

You mention 40kg on a straight bar - so is that 60kg in total? How much are you bench pressing and squatting (to get some kind of idea of comparison)?

Re: when i do standing military press it feels like my back is about to give in

I'm doing a 15kg bar, with 10kg and 2.5 each side
so 40 kg altogether

deadlift 95kg

bench i'm doing 70kg

squatting 50kg, legs are weak.

I think its a form issue, though i finding it hard to correct my postions as my spine feels like its about to snap

Re: when i do standing military press it feels like my back is about to give in

If its an Oly bar it's 20kg?

40kg and a bench at 70kg doesn't seem too far out.

50kg squat is poor imo if your deads are at 95kg - are you sure its a leg problem or is it a back/form problem?
