Lower back pain

Hi guys about a month ago i put my back out lower left side doing bent over single arm rows. It was very painful couldnt move pick anything up stand up sit down etc hurt. It went away after a few days so i thought i would go back to gym and just push on but went lighter on my back. Well yesterday i was only taking my bike leathers of and it went again before i even got to the gym. Doc said take paracetamol etc. Does any one have any ideas? I was going to take a week off as i havnt for almost a year to let it repair and dose up on pills but if any one else knows something i can do to help i would be greatful to hear it.
Cheers
Neil

Re: Lower back pain

Where does it hurt? Any referred pain into the groin or down your legs?

Also - what causes it, rotation, leaning forwards/backwards/side ways?

Sounds like a possible unstable segment to me. Do you do any core work?

Re: Lower back pain

Routine injury advice until you book yourself in at a sports injury clinic.

Use ice to reduce initial inflammation then rotate with heat(using a heat pack)
Apply anti inflammatory gel to site and try and keep the area mobile with some light stretching.

It the bottom left of my back right by the bone above your bum. its not going down my leg etc its just isolated in that one area. When it happens it hurts to lean foreward standup and sit down and to pick anything up. After abit the pain goes so i can move around ok but it still aches quite abit. I dont tend to really do any situps could that be a reason?

Re: Lower back pain

What causes the pain initially though? Is there one position that causes the pain to start? When you've triggered the injury you'll experience the symptoms you've described due to inflammation. Maybe try running your hand down your leg to your knee - from the front and from either side. Then try arching back. Usually one position will trigger some kind of pain. You might want to wait until you are under the supervision of a physio or doc to do this - up to you whether you'd like to go down the route of self diagnosis.

Could be any number of issues tbh. If this is a constant problem then I suggest you see a physio to correct posture or to give you some core stability exercises or like para said, a sports injury clinic will be a good idea. Book yourself in to a good physio, as ever the NHS isn't really going to be sympathetic towards you if you continue to lift so private may be your best option - I certainly don't regret it.

Core work goes a lot deeper than just sit ups. Sit ups will work your visible layer of abs, not really your core.

Re: Lower back pain

GPs are a waste of time mate - that's my own personal opinion and experience. They'll just tell you to rest and/or take painkillers and anti-inflammatory tablets - which isn't always the best route.

From what I can gather your have a rotation problem which a physio should be able to help you with. You may get referred by your GP to an NHS physio, but they aren't all they've cracked up to be.

Maybe I'm just cynical.

Totally agree! GPs provide a good service, but aside from your standard everyday illness, which is best suited to antibiotics or painkillers, their knowledge is poor.

Unless a GP has an interest in sports, and related injuries, the majority will not resolve your problem.

Your injury, from your description, sounds muscular and so with rest and rehab should be fine in a few weeks, however go to a sports injury clinic for the best advice and to prevent your condition worsening.

Re: Lower back pain

mate it sounds to me like youve popped the joint in your lower back which both myself and my training partner have done several times now . only thing that sorts it is a propper physio . they will have to put it back in place usually by lying you on a bed and yanking on your leg total relief when it goes back into place , then you just got to train carfully untill everything round the joint gets back to normal ive also had acupuncture. to speed up recovery and sort out the nerve ending that surround the joint.

Yeah that could be right it does hurt on that lower left bone the nobbly bit. How many times did you have to see the physio to get it sorted?

Re: Lower back pain

about 3 or 4 times mate . my training parner just put his out 4wks ago hes been to physio about 6 times now as it keeps jumping back out again ,only just this last week has he been pain free . soory to say mate but once this happens to you youve got to train with caution all the time. its always on my mind when training back and legs terrified that it goes again. best advice is get to that physio you def need to get it worked on .
