![]() | Re: training after disc surgery thats what happend with me.i had 6 months of pain in the right leg and the mri showed slight narrowing and a disc bulge l4/5.i ended up needing surgery last october which has given slight improvement but consultant says i might have to have the disc out and a fusion done to give full relief. i have found doing alot a core work has given me a lot of relief but im gonna stay away from any loading exercises but it has been a real hard journey i could hardly walk even 2 weeks after surgery and an mri has shown that a fragment of the disc is trapping the nerve again but not as bad as before.keeping more active is better for pain relief than laying about the house though!i hope to hear some advice off some of you guys as what to do and what not to do as the physios are saying stay away from bodybuilding full stop. |

![]() | Re: training after disc surgery I have similar questions. After 9 months of not training / 4 physio's / 1 chiropractor / 1 accupuncturist / 2 consultants ........ An MRI showed that I had a slipped disc and 2 other discs were torn and bulging. After following the McKenzie programme I now feel much better, and have started to do exercises to stregnthen my core. I want to get back to training with weights - but am nervous ...... Any advice from anybody who has suffered back problems would be appreciated. |

![]() | Re: training after disc surgery Firstly im not a bodybuilder but i have been training with weights for years. I had my disc op 15 years ago and after doing the physio and a lot of hard work i managed to get back to something like normal again. I dont squat anymore,or do any exercise that might put the lower back under too much stress, what i have done is keep in relatively good shape, much better than most of my age group , and concentrate on fitness more than physique. That said im currently waiting for a scan to try and solve my sciatic problem, im still doing as much as i can walking up to 10 miles a day and some dumbell work at home, keeping mobile is the best thing i can do.I'd just say just take it steady you have plenty of time to get back to normal again. |

Hi mate How much pain were you in before the surgery? So you had surgery and you only had a bulge? The disc had no herniation? Did the MRI show whether the nucleus is just poking out of the disk or has a piece "broken off" completely? I've got a S1 herniation and it's quite badly dehydrated, although I'm not any real pain, I can't sit for to long and I tell my back isn't right at all I've had a problem for 1.5 years, surgery isn't the answer for me, the pain isn't serious enough As you say mate, keeping active but within reason seems the best way look into Inversion therapy, helped big with me I think you need a full recovery before trying with any weights, unless you go steady, like I did for while, you can't train with any bite, any training must focus on recovery, like staedy glute - ham - raisers, steady leg curls ect, thats my shout anyway mate This might help http://www.vax-d.co.uk/VAXDTreatment/Intro.htm Look into the Wobble Chair http://www.pettibonsystem.com/ Have you tried sitting on a swizz ball instead of a normal chair?
