Re: Lower bck pain, again!

I've got lower back pains too. Training hamstrings is tough. I tried really light straight leg deadlifts last night. 40kg and i couldnt move due to my back. Is this a problem that doesnt go away.

Frog, what symptoms do you have?

Was there a sudden event that caused an injury?

Smile Re: Lower bck pain, again!

just to reiterate/ clarify.... the importance of core work..it's something many of us overlook all too easily in the gym (in the early days... all those years ago!) .. also good posture is v important if you have a sedentary job/ lifestyle, and remember.. weak abs often translates to weak lower back... so find time to train those abs and supporting back muscle (erector spinae is NOT a dirty word!). if not on a lifting day, then at least on two other days in your weekly cycle.. you'lll never realise how important these muscles are until you start having probs!

... just a general comment for any training newbies

wrt physio....I struggled with rotator cuff injury from benching for months and refused to see one 'cos I'm a tight git.... eventually gave in, and it made a diff... there are so many about it's diff to decide which is best, so I made sure I got a recommendation from lads in the gym

Re: Lower bck pain, again!

I may have an analysis for you gents. i asked my physio-friend-of-mine about a lower back issue i get during squats.. i cannot do any sort of barbell squat without my back having dramas. had my technique looked at by many people and they said it was spot on.. im a personal trainer and self-analyse my technique and i can't see any dramas either. anyways i asked my physio friend and he examined my back. turns out i have overdeveloped muscle in my lower back. put it this way - it looks like i have a mini 6 pack on my lower back! so i asked what could have caused it and he said core strength or hamstring flexibility. my core strength is amazing (not being big-headed here but ive worked hard on core) but my hamstring flexibility is something shocking due to training as a teenager and being too stubborn to stretch after a session! i stretch my whole body daily now because i dont want to be 25 with a lower back problem and will let you know if it improves or not. self analyse yourselves - tight hamstrings? rock hard lower back muscle? stretch and stay off the squats until your hamstrings rock. look on the bright side though - at least you have a strong lower back! :P

Re: Lower bck pain, again!

Marc, I have the exact opposite problem. My hams are too strong and end up taking over. This has resulted in a weak core and lower back. Add deadlifting to this and pop, I've got a lower back injury. I've finally got to the bottom of the problem after over a year of pain.

I strained a ligament which resulted in a loose segment in my lower back. Side ways movements aggravate it. Forward and back are fine.

Stretching really does help this as well as core work.

Re: Lower bck pain, again!

invisible.. i could be wrong as the physio was just a physio in training..

does your lower back ache as such? my core is strong due to surfing & mountain biking & ab work.. but lower back seems to ache like anything when DOMS kicks in... maybe i have the same problem as you do? very very tight hamstrings? build up of muscle on your lower back? i will take a pic and upload it of my lower back later tonight if this whether stops being so freaking cold!!

Re: Lower bck pain, again!

My lower back does ache like DOMS sometimes - if I've done a lot of twisting and side ways bending. Back squats cause problems if I go heavy - front squats not so much. My back gets weak at the very bottom.

Generally, my hams and it bands take over and as a result I have an extremely weak Glute Med and core. My it bands ache from all the extra work my glutes should be doing and as a result I get referred pain into my groin. My abs are coming along after a lot of core training and I've also had to relearn how to walk!

Try it band, piriformis and ham stretches.

Do you have pain around your hip at all?

Try leaning from side to side, sliding your hand down your leg to your knee. How does that feel? Also, try the same backwards and forwards.
Also - study how you walk. Legs wide, narrow? Do you have any side ways movement? Do your knees tend to almost buckle in under you when you walk? This is what happens to me due to a weak glute med, pulling my back out. This is what happen what I was deadlifting, causing a ligament strain and damage to a segment in my spine.

However I quite often lighten the weight and do one-legged squats instead and get no pain at all. Twisting / Oblique movement doesn't bother my back at all.

I think my hams take over from my glute also as I don't ever get a sore **** unless I do 1legged squats or lunges. However my IT's don't ache, the only thing I notice is my hamstrings are always really tight.

Try it band, piriformis and ham stretches.

As mentioned.. IT band seems fine.

Never... Tight but apart from that?

Try leaning from side to side, sliding your hand down your leg to your knee. How does that feel? Also, try the same backwards and forwards.
No hassles there either..

Nah this one is all yours too. Your new nickname is gonna be Bungstep .. Nah no dramas there at all.. Different cases then I assume? Oh well thanks for the post mate. Cheers.
