If you're training hard then you won't want to go back and do the same exercise the next day - you'll want (and need) the time to reccuperate. Your muscles need time to reapair...also, if you train them too soon you won't be able to exert your full force.

Split your body parts up into days of the week - perhaps similar to what DK said. Personally, right now I'll train for two days, then rest for one. I split it into day (1) Chest, (2) Legs, (3), Shoulders, and (4) back. Now that's not neccessarilly the way to do it, just an example of structuring your routines. If you really want to train every day, maybe you could alternate weights days with Cardio days?

When I first started learning seriously about weight training, the main thing that surprised me was how little you have to train to build muscle. Before I was like a lot of people I still see in the gym, doing a total body workout that lasts for hours and then doing the same thing the next day or a few days later, and like this I never saw any real results.

Then I found this website, and I was advised that I should only exercise each bodypart 1 time a week, and each workout should last no longer than 30 minutes! I thought it sounded way to little to build muscle but I gave it a go anyway. I worked out 3 simple routienes 1) that worked my chest, triceps and shoulders 2)worked my upper back and biceps 3)legs and lower back. Each routiene had only 8 exercises in it with 3 sets per exercise with really heavy weights so I could do only 8 reps. The routienes take a maximum 40 minutes. I do 1 on monday 2 on wednesday and 3 on Friday so each bodypart gets a full weeks rest between workouts.

From my second week I was seeing results, everysingle workout I am stronger than the last! and every month I can see definate improvements in my body.

So what im trying to say is less is more,

if you invest just 1.5 hours a week, split into 3 sessions and work like a demon in those 30 minutes you will reap the rewards.

One more thing, anyone on here will tell you - training is not anywhere near as important as diet.

I understand that it is not practical for many people to follow a regimented diet plan all the time, but you should still visit the diet section to get a feel for the type of thing you should be eating, If you are serious about building some muscle you need to be eating more calories, from better sources with plenty of protiens and 'good' fats.

If your new to the gym thing i think full body routines work pretty well.

3 days a week, mon, wed, fri heavy compound exercises is what you want.

I don't think newbies benefit much from splitting workouts into bodyparts. It takes quite a bit of experience to be able to push each muscle hard enough to benefit from an each bodypart once-a-week routine.

If you are a total newbie to training , then this is definately the best way to work out, it gives a chance for the tendons to strengthen as well as the muscles.

Also it is very rare for a person new to training to be able to train intensely enough on a split routine

I agree. 3 day periodised heavy compound full/half body is the best for newbies, intermediate AND advanced trainees too IMO.

I agree with stu and big, compound exercises 3 days per week are the way to go. I find if im stagnating in the gym i just go back to basics and it helps bump up my poundages and reps
