One day on One day off / adequate rest question...

I've got a workout plan that I'm following which is 3 workouts that focus on different areas of the body. I'm doing 1 day on and 1 day off as advised.

I cant remember exactly what each workout covers, but the last workout was Legs and Abs.

From what i can remember, todays workout includes a few ab exercises too, but my abs are still aching from Tuesday's workout.

My question is, should you wait until muscles are no longer aching before exercising them again? I know its not good to overwork muscles and not give them proper rest, but does that apply to abs/core in the same way?

If your just starting out i would say go and train, muscle soreness has little to do with muscle recovery any way.

I'd say don't train sore muscle because of being them sore you are gunna be weaker and thats just setting you up for injury.

I don't train sore muscle because i lose alot of strength and i can't complete my workout aswell, which i find just makes me overtrain and sets me back a few of weeks.
so i think you will be better of just resting a day or two more.

Peace!

Strenght athletes would never make any progress in that case.

Cheers for the responses guys, think I'll train today then. Am pretty sure it's only medicine ball leg raises that are abs today anyway, the rest is chest, shoulders and lats I think.

If you done this then nothing would get done, muscle soreness to me, the day after is a sign of a good workout your days rest inbetween would be considered by some to be excessive but if you can't get to the gym 4-5 days a week then there is nothing you can do about it

Generally i train every body part twice a week apart from legs.

I was just saying that what I do, is if my muscle is sore from my last session is rest it another day or i get no where and end up overtraining.

I always thought that training a sore muscle is a bad idea thats all

Peace!

Re: One day on One day off / adequate rest question...

When you are just starting out, you ache for ages, if you blast your legs properly they'll be unbelievably painful by day 3 to the point you can't sit down, and be sore for a good week if not longer. This passes so just train through it and after a few weeks you'll have a nice feeling of having worked out rather than sore. Look at con's avatar then ask yourself do I need to question his advice?didn't think so...

Con may well do but he also knows how to train and knows what he is on about..

You still have to train and eat properly to get to the same size as con is.

So in fact he has to be more careful when he trains as to not rupture something. ever though he might have actually started out natty?

I am a come back expert - very lazy once winter sets in - plus had 3 kids 4 years apart so couldn't keep up the training. Everytime I come back, it hurts like hell for days sometimes weeks. It's very hard to overtrain when 1st starting imo in fact I train each body part at least twice every 10 days at first until I see it impeading my gains, 2 on 1 off, 1 on, 1 off. etc.
PS I'm 37 so if I can do it, so can a youngster
