    Muscle growth at 40?

Im about to turn 40 ( thankfully i dont look or feel that old) , i was told that you can basically forget about building new and bigger muscles at this age despite a youthfull appearence. I now have the time and inclination to get the body i want but is my age agaist me?

the older you get the more of your muscle fibres turn to slower twitch ones so ive read, tht makes you better for endurance and things like tht to a certain extent

I was told after 30 I may as well forget it too. I think it will be a bit harder but I've known guys who have started late and made significant improvements well into their 40's and 50's etc - maybe they were genetically gifted, I don't know but I wouldn't worry about what other people say. A lot of this stuff is down to one's attitude, in my opinion.

Your natural testosterone will be well down by now, so you'll find it harder to build muscle - unless you take some gear.

Then if you work out intensely you should make some good gains.

Wasn't Daniel Craig in his late 30's when he got into shape for the first James Bond Movie, and he packed on lean muscle - I hate using celebrities as an example as they have the money/time to devote a period of their life into getting into shape, but still I think it is possible to build muscle in your 30's, 40's, just becomes harder, and diet becomes even more key.....and if you're really eager, there is always the steroid route...

You'll make improvements if you are a slob at the mo. You'll still have more test than a woman and they can get in shape!

I went from the other direction being fit and trained all my adult life... I was natty and a decent size but by 42 I was getting p1ssed off at the increase in BF/reduction in mass/strenghth

bang in some sauce mate once you get in a bit of shape if you want any mass
Did you live hard today...are you trying at life? Live today like it is your last day alive....I promise you.... one day it will be.

    The limiting factors are:
    1. Testosterone levels
    2. Recovery Ability/Genetics
    3. Realistic Expectations/Goals
Numbers 1 and 3 you can do something about, number 2 you can't. However if you go about it the right way there is nothing to stop you from achieveing your goals and is it not better to start and see how far you can progress, rather than to write it off altogether just because someone says you should forget it?

Take the time to do your research and then set out a short and long term plan this will help keep you on track. Plus you have a weath of knowledge and more importantly experience with the various members of this board this will save you huge amounts of wasted time...

Good luck and well done for taking the first steps..

    Best

    Paul.
