| Quick question for you... Although i've never been a body builder i am no stranger to the gym, my problem is that over recent years my work and social life has got in the way of my working out and i'm about two stone over weight (the wrong type of weight). Is it possible to start a body building program now, or would you suggest that i trim down a bit first and then start to build muscle mass. I am 185cm tall, and weigh 17 stones exactly. Thanks, John. |

| Hi Johnk I am relatively inexperienced but have been in the same boat as you, and to some extent still trying to get out of it! The principle I have been taught is that you should train to build muscle and the fat will take care of itself. This is based on: Big lean muscles require more energy, thereore burining more calories. The trianing itself requires lots of energy /cals Muscle recovery and repair requires a lot of energy, which burns calories while you sleep. What I have done over the last year is stay more or less the same weight, but have changed shape considerably in all the right areas. |

Remember the bigger your chest and shoulders are the smaller the waist looks. If you had some big shoulders who cares what the waist looks like, you only will be able to see it (waist) if you dont have a shirt on. Your strength will be up with the weight up. Now is prime, you will see good results and this will keep you in the gym. I would hit the big muscle groups like legs, chest, shoulders and back. Forget about the abs until the waist goes down. Remember these are muscles too and they will build as well. Start out slow and do maybe one or two sets to FAILURE per body part. Take it from there how you feel. You will build faster than a guy that has never hit the gym as muscle has memory. Start slow and dont do too much. You can go in and do 2 sets per body part to failure and work the whole body. Wait 3 days and do this again.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | That age old myth again - 'I need to lose weight before I can start training'. I'd love to know where that idea originated but it couldn't be more wrong. 'Weight training is not just for bodybuilders. Anyone wishing to gain muscle and lose fat will benefit from incorporating it into their fitness program. Many wishing to lose weight (espescially women) steer clear of weight training, when in fact they should be doing more of it. When losing weight, you want to make sure that it is fat you are losing, and by weight training you do that by preserving muscle tissue (use it or lose it!) that would otherwise be lost instead of fat. Also, the more muscle you have, the faster your metabolism (i.e. the more fat you burn). People who try to lose weight without lifting weights usually end up as just a smaller version of themselves, if they were pear shaped to begin with they end up looking just like a smaller pear.' - from bodyshapersfitness.com What I would recommend to you John is to follow a basic bodybuilding program - perhaps a three day split - and maybe do 1 or 2 short, intense cardio sessions a week. Then just clean up your diet and you should be adding muscle and burning fat in no time. When you first start training regularly, you will see good gains in strength and eventually muscle. If you put on one pound of muscle, that pound will burn an extra 40 calories a day to survive. That’s 40 more calories a day just when you're at rest - you'll also increase the number of calories you burn while exercising. These extra calories will come from your fat stores. So long as you follow a good diet and aren't actively trying to gain weight (i.e. bulking) then as joelewie said if you hit the weights, the fat will take care of itself. Hope that helps - good luck mate!

Or even...turning fat into muscle is impossible. Even so, I would bulk up a bit unless you are very overweight, since the increased muscle mass will increase your calorie needs making it easier to lose the fat when you want to. | |

That really gets me to when all my friends that don't workout keep telling me that when I stop all my muscle will turn to fat or how they just joined a gym and are turning all their fat to muscle.
