Totally New and needing help

Hi All

Just joined the site and needing advice.

I am 34 and have been sort of training all this year, with some results. Not always the right results.

Here is my situation.

1) I have Crohns disease and as a result have had to have 2 ops on my stomach resulting in weak stomach and lower back muscles and slightly lob sided lower belly. Also i am afraid to change diet too much as not to upset the Crohns (I'm OK now by the way)
2) Getting Married in 13 weeks and am needing to tone up the stomach and chest most of all. I need to lose about 1 stone to be my ideal weight. I'm 6ft and weigh 13.12 (this morning)
3) I tend to work really late at night, 16 hour days so I only have time (by getting up earlier) in the morning to exercise.

I have a multi gym in the garage, some free weights and swiss ball etc. I have started running. (Not done that since school) I like cycling and try and cycle to work if the weather is good etc.

I don't eat bad. I try to avoid fatty stuff (mainly because of the Crohns)

I'm not after being big, just fit and not flabby. I have to be honest and say I don't love exercise so I do find it hard to motivate myself. I woke today with a good attitude and went straight into the garage for 45 mins. I also intend to go for a run when I get home. (before sitting in front of the laptop for another 4-5 hours)

What are the best things I can do to loose the flab quicker, strengthen up my back and stomach and generally get myself fit.

Thanks in advance

Hi PompyMan

Crohns is an Inflammatory Bowel Disease which is, in layman terms, over active immune system fighting something that isn't there and causing ulcers of the intestine.

Diet isn't suppose to be an issue, but everyone reacts different to different thing. Where one person might not be able to tolerate pasta, another could eat nothing but...

I'm am lucky that the only things that seem to cause me too much trouble diet wise is spicy stuff and greasy foods. My main concern is for the immune system as I am immune suppressant medication to reduce my immunity. Therefore can pick up colds etc easier than most.

I am hoping exercise is going to make me fitter in general too.

Hope that helps a bit.

Regards

3) I tend to work really late at night, 16 hour days so I only have time (by getting up earlier) in the morning to exercise. much respect to you for having the energy, i work a lot but not this much and it takes a lot of effort to train aswell

(Not done that since school) I like cycling and try and cycle to work if the weather is good etc. running is fine for losing weight, especially if you are not wanting to be BIG. as for weight training, a simple three day split should be fine, there are plenty of starting routines on bodybuilding.com .... i would say out of the week you should only need to dedicate a maximum of 3 hours to weights

I don't eat bad. I try to avoid fatty stuff (mainly because of the Crohns)

losing flab is all about expending more calories than you take in, so why not post up your average days meals and see if you can add up the calories and macronutrients (carbs, fat, protein)....... strengthening your back can be achieved easily using basic exercises such as the deadlift, though check your form as it can work the opposie way if you are not careful

hope those comments can help you a little, there is a wealth of knowledge on this forum so stick around

Re: Totally New and needing help

What work do you do for 16 hours ?

If its fat loss you are after then you are in a good position as personally ui would say fat loss is much more down to diet than it is to training. Im guessing working all those hours you are probably prone to "snacking" which is a killer.

I think the best thing you can do is post up an example diet that you could pre make and take to work EVERY day. We can then help you further.

Re: Totally New and needing help

Hi Guys

Thanks for your comments.

My diet currently is something like this

Breakfast
2 poached eggs on un-buttered toast
or
Beans on toast

Lunch
Chicken salad
or tuna sandwich

Dinner
Pasta with meat and sauce
or
Indian, Chinese etc.

I try not to eat to much bad stuff. The future wife is a fitness freak so not a huge amount of bad stuff in the house to eat.

As Irit mentioned, I can snack, but I'm not a big snacker. A bag of crisps maybe.

Weekend blow outs are the killer at the moment. A friend just got married, we had a stag weekend in Poland and an all day wedding to consume tooooooo much alcohol!

I'm a director of a new advertising and design company. We have been going just over 12 months and not quite able to employ a new designer so I am doing all of that. Deadlines are looming all the time at the moment.

I welcome your comments
Regards
