Calves

Hi Folks,

What exercises can be done for these with a barbell and dumbells.

At the moment I do standing calf raises with the barbell across my shoulder, at the same position when i do squats.

I have a raised platform that I put the front of my feet onto and do the calf raises.

Just wondering what else there might be with the above equipment just to add some variety?

Thanks

Julio

Re: Calves

I do lunges, right down, which seem to hit my calves as hard as my quads, glutes and hams. Guess its a good allround exercise. I do it with the olympic bar across my shoulders because I find it gives me better stability.

I also do calf raises on the leg press machine at the same weight I do the leg press (currently 60kg ) for 5 sets of 20.

I have also introduced step ups holding a dbell in each hand (at the moment 6kg ). It is quite a high step, so works the whole leg.

Hope these help!

Re: Calves

How about single leg standing calf raises.

Stand on a raised platform on your left leg resting the ball of your foot on the edge, elevate the right foot and tuck it behind the left heel so it is out of the way. Hold a dumbell in the left hand and use the right hand to support yourself on something.
Then perform a standing raise.
Then swap to the right leg.

Re: Calves

Don't know if I dare risk working one calf at once. I tore my left calf six months ago walking up some steps after getting out of an ice cold pool. I never want to do it again!

Re: Calves

Hold something heavy and walk up something.

Examples ...

Stairs and dumbells
Walk uphill with a heavy rucksack
Lift a rangerover and walk up everest

You get my point, its a very simple movemnet so there any sooo many ways to hit your calves, funny how people can normally only come up with calf raises.
